Book Review: Raw for a Reason!

I always considered myself a careful eater --- after all, I'd lived in France and Germany, am a gourmet cook, and have always managed to stay slender. The more I read about the American Food Industry, the more vegetarian I became, to the point where I can say I was easily 80% vegetarian. But it took a life-threatening health crisis to make me even start to consider the value of incorporating as much RAW FOOD into my diet as possible, and Dr. Ferendo's book helped me to do it.

For anyone who's never traveled outside the US, this book is a real eye-opener. Americans eat most of the worst, most processed, chemically modified or treated food on the planet, and I'm not just talking about fast-food joints, I mean the stuff that is normally available in your everyday American supermarket.

Dr. Ferendo explains in a simple yet serious manner how and why to incorporate more raw food into your diet, which doesn't just help you to lose weight and get rid of the years' of eating processed toxins, it improves your total health profile and metabolism, giving you more energy and a "beefed-up" immune system, minus the artery-clogging, antibiotic-laced beef! You'll also find you finally have the energy to exercise by losing the inadvertent overload of carbohydrates typical to the American diet, which saps the energy out of so many of us.

I had to start eating raw food quite suddenly, especially large quantities of greens, after a death-defying lack of diagnosis of a genetic autoimmune disease called Hashimoto's Hyothyroidism. Eating so many raw greens was a radical concept to me, having been brought up a "meat and potatoes" American WASP. But the endocrinologist said the reason they'd almost missed my diagnosis was because I was one of the very few people with any form of hypothyroidism who'd managed to not only not get overweight, but to stay SKINNY! But that didn't mean I was healthy! In fact, my triglycerides were at a heart-stopping 260, and she told me that eating lots of raw, leafy greens had to start ASAP. Where to begin? Dr. Ferendo's book was a God-send. Yes, eating lots of kale and collard greens and spinach every day was new to me, but in his book you'll learn how to mix up smoothies that actually TASTE GOOD, no small issue when you've been declared "pre-diabetic" like I was, and your choice is to eat well and raw or be shooting yourself with insulin by next year. My triglycerides are already down to 185 (I also use fish oil) in 4 months so I still need to get them down under 130, but it's a very fast way to make a big improvement.

It's not an easy choice or a 5-minute solution, and the author doesn't try to make you think it is. But he does show you that by gradually incorporating more raw food into your diet, you will be vastly improving your health and quality of life. If you need any MORE reasons to add more raw food to your menu, you will find it in this book. And your heart and health will thank you for it!
