Book Reviews of Red Seas Under Red SkiesBook Review: Lynch's decent but not worthy sequel Summary: 3 Stars
Lynch set the bar pretty high with his debut, and it was sad to see how far his sophomore effort fell. Though the same great tone is consistently splendid throughout this sequel, many of his great characters from the first book are missing. (SPOILERS) Worse, the plot is fairly uninspired and uses a narrative trick or two that would shame the pulpiest of pulp writers. Finally, the pacing is horrendous and the book's conclusion comes screamingly fast and feels forced and non-genuine. I do think that Lynch on a bad day is a writer to emulate, but, for him, this book is not up to his debut standard.
Book Review: Terrible . . . Summary: 1 Stars
I cannot believe that the same man wrote this and the book that preceded it. This book drags on and on. Jean and Locke and never in any peril. The storyline is convuluted and the characters routinely escape difficult situations through luck, which makes the whole thing unbelievable. There are multiple storylines, but the interesting ones are abruptly dropped midstory. The ending feels rushed, while the main story seems to continue on and on.
I read some of the bad reviews and wouldn't believe them. Even if you liked the first, as I did, leave this one alone. It's awful.
Book Review: Hate to say so, but a little disappointed... Summary: 2 Stars
Count me among the readers that loved the first book in this series, and found this second book a little wanting.
First off, it took me forever. I found myself skipping paragraphs that just weren't going anywhere. Second, I didn't find the bad guys to be as bad as they were in The Lies of Locke Lamora, and finally...the ending just wasn't up to par.
I will continue to read the books though, because Mr. Lynch does do enough to keep me interested, and I do love the main characters.
All in all, an ok read, but I think the future books will be better.
Book Review: Brilliant follow-up to The Lies of Locke Lamora Summary: 5 Stars
Red Seas Under Red Skies is a follow-up to Scott Lynch's The Lies of Locke Lamora. Locke and his partner Jean have left Camorr (the setting of Lies...) to go to a new venue. I'm not going to spoil the plot, but I will say that their primary taarget is a casino, and, during the course of things, they end up on a pirate vessel. I am very excited to read more in the Gentleman Bastard sequence (this novel is number 2 in the 7-book series). The third book has seen significant delays (it was supposed to be available well over a year ago), but I am eager as ever to see the next novel.
Book Review: Not as good as "Lies" but still an entertaining read Summary: 4 Stars
I didn't find "Red Seas, Red Skies" as good as its predecessor. I think part of that was the sheer novelty of the dialogue in "Lies." The dialogue was still good in "Red Seas" but it wasn't novel anymore. The end was a bit rushed but I enjoyed reading the book immensely. Didn't mind the nautical terms at all, but then I read the geometry appendix at the end of "Anathem." I think what Scott needs most for his books is someone to vet his plots and make sure they remain tight and logical to someone who isn't creating the world.
