Seldom do books on relationship dilemmas hold the reader to the very last page. Often, the reader loses interest somewhere between the middle and the end. Each chapter contains the same advice couched in different terms, and he or she becomes weary of the effort. A bookmark is placed at the point of initial boredom, and the book lands on a shelf next to other such volumes. Soon the shelf is full, and brightly colored stick-on bookmarks protrude above the top of the books like fringe standing at attention.
Not so with Ms. Hutslar's latest offering, Relationships: Gifts of the Spirit. It's a riveting discussion that looks at solving relationship problems in a new and unique way-by looking within one's self. Verbally illustrated with real case histories, the easy-flowing, often witty prose reads just as Ms. Hutslar speaks-openly, honestly, and with a soul-touching eloquence that fills the reader with stunning realization. I experienced several instances where I said to myself, "Aha! I know exactly what she's saying. I never looked at it that way. She's absolutely right!" It's those many Ahas, interspersed with broad smiles caused by unusual and sometimes funny examples, that the reader finds irresistible.
No colored stick-ons protrude above my copy. I read it all, glanced within my soul, and gained insight into my own relationships-the essence of the book's message. The process of looking within unwraps the gift that contains the solution. A delightful read, an insightful process, a well researched work, this book will be referenced again and again and will stand alone on any shelf.
