Book Reviews of Remember Me?

Book Review: Made me fall back in love with Sophie Kinsella's writing
Summary: 5 Stars

Despite reading the rave reviews of this book I was skeptical of whether it would be worth reading. All though I am a huge fan of Sophie Kinsella's Shopaholic series I was less captivated by her later books, Undomestic Goddess and Can You Keep a Secret? as well as those written by her as Madeleine Wickham. After finishing this book, however, I was not only pleasantly surprised, but found I enjoyed it equally as much as the Shopaholic series.
This book follows the story of 28-year-old Lexi Smart as she awakes with amnesia after an accident and cannot remember the last three years of her life. Navigating her new life she initially feels like she has stepped into a fairy tale until she slowly comes to find that not everything is as it appears.
Although this premise, as others have alluded to, has been done before Kinsella covers it skillfully in a way that is engaging from start to finish. She throws in enough twists and turns along the way that while the book is somewhat predictable, the reader is still surprised and entertained by how things unfold. She especially succeeds bringing her main character to life. Lexi is likeable, multidimensional and easy to relate to. Even if you have never experienced amnesia (which I am sure many readers will have not) the character deals with plenty of things that are relatable like family drama, romantic relationship challenges, and the loss of a friendship. She also infuses a lot of humor into the book, as she did with the Shopaholic series, which makes for a fun, breezy read. I, like many other readers, also appreciated that she did not tie all of the loose ends up at the end of the book, which would have made it seem too contrived. Like many of her Shopaholic books I found myself always eager to read the next chapter and happily devoured it in three days.
Overall this is a great book that is a perfect read while on vacation or curling up at home. Like most Chick Lit it's no literary wonder, but it is funny, relatable, and great fun.

Book Review: Excellent audio edition. Very good story...superbly read
Summary: 4 Stars

Twenty-something single Lexi Smart has a life that is going nowhere. She is not very attractive, her career is nothing great, and her love life is lackluster at best. Then, running for a cab, she falls and hits her head and wakes up three years later stunningly beautiful, super-successful, and married to a "perfect" man. But she has no memory of the past three years! Lexi is thrilled she is living the life she has always dreamed of...but is it all too good to be true?

I like this book with its deft blend of humor and heartache, along with a budding romance and an intriguing office quandary. 'Remember Me?' is in company with some of Kinsella's best works - which for me include 'Can You Keep a Secret?' and the original 'Shopaholic'. I listened to this one on audio CD and was hooked right from the start. Reader Rosalyn Landor (who is superb and is a favorite of mine) skillfully handles a wide range and age of characters, has excellent comic timing, and really knows how to work one's emotions. I often had a lump in my throat while listening to Lexi's travails.

It is Kinsella's story itself, though, which earns most of the credit. Lexi Smart is a winningly imperfect heroine, and I was quickly consumed with how she got where she was and where it all was heading. I veered between laughter and tears over the absurd circumstances in which Lexi found herself, the off-the-wall behavior of the supporting cast, and the heart-wrenching situations she was forced to endure. While the romance element is fine, it is Lexi's journey of discovery that really makes this book. And I like the message as well.

Book Review: You'll Love Lexi
Summary: 5 Stars

One minute Lexi Smart is standing in the rain in boots that are too small trying to hail a cab after being stood up by Loser Dave and the next thing she knows she's waking up in the hospital with a killer headache and a killer, drop dead gorgeous husband and she can't remember any of it. Has she woken into an alternate universe? Now Lexi has to try and remember the life she can't imagine herself having. In other words she has to come to terms with the fact that she is wealthy, has a great job, carries designer bags and has a new set of friends she cannot understand. And then she meets her husband's co-worker Jon and there is a glimmer of recognition but only a glimmer. Is she ever going to get her memory back and when exactly will she feel like she's wearing the right life and not a pinching too small a boot life?

Ms. Kinsella has done it again. I can honestly say I'm not a huge fan of chick-lit but Ms. Kinsella is an author I'll automatically pick up. REMEMBER ME does not offer a new storyline but the author makes it fresh and entertaining with her use of characterization and her trademark wit. Lexi is a larger than life character and the reader will be engaged from the first page. There are plenty of laughs out loud moments; times where you sigh with understanding and you might just tear up a time or two as well. For a page-turning good time look no further.

Book Review: Define a perfect life...
Summary: 5 Stars

Any chick lit book requires some sort fo suspension of disbelief. Once you're able to do that - Sophie Kinsella's books are some of the best out there, and she's my personal favorite.

The first chapter describes the miserable life of 25 years old Lexi Smart, who has a lousy job, a boyfriend who stood her up once again, and her dad just died. On her way home from a night out with the girls, she gets hit with a car - and wakes up in the hospital as a 28 year old.

To her surprise - her 28 years old self has everything she had ever wished to have: lots of money, a great job, a handsome & caring husband (with loser Dave out of sight), the perfect home, and she somehow has a perfect figure, a perfect smile and designer clothes and bag.

But slowly she discovers that on the way to the perfect life, she lost the best part of her old life - especially her old friends (which she alienated on her climb up the corporate ladder), some of her values such as loyalty and love...

While the book is definitelly a fluffy, fun book - it does manage to examine what makes up a 'perfect' life, and whether uts worth the price we pay for it...

Book Review: Lukewarm Soup On A Blustery Day!
Summary: 1 Stars

First off, I simply adore the charming Becky Bloomwood & the Shopaholic series. Remember Me just didn't do it for me.

I found myself distracted & bored. I struggled to finish it. I must admit, I wanted to return it to Barnes & Noble after reading the first few pages.

I really wanted to love it... I didn't. I wanted to like it... not so much.

I found it to be like lukewarm soup on a blustery day.

Lexi Smart annoyed me. I wondered where the fun, lovable, naturally charming characters Sophie Kinsella brings to her zany novels were hiding.

I wasn't looking for a thinly veiled Becky, but give me something.

I questioned Lexi quite a bit. Lexi's big change didn't seem believable. It just seemed forced.

Sophie definitely did her research on amnesia, but she should of developed Lexi a bit more.

Remember Me is not one of Sophie Kinsella's best novels & Lexi is not one of her best characters.

Definitely not worth the $$$ I spent for the hardcover.

Fans of Kinsella's will no doubt add this to their shelves.
