Book Reviews of Remember Me?Book Review: Fast read, but lacked emotional resonance Summary: 3 Stars
I'm a fan of Kinsella so pushed my way through this novel, but I'm happy I got it as an ARC and didn't actually have to pay for it in hardcover -- I was disappointed. The exploration of relationships (romantic, familial, friendly, etc.) is a tenant of chick lit, I think, and I found this book to be lacking in pretty much every area.
Main character Lexi is, to me, a wholly unlikeable character -- both before she's in the accident and after. Once a dowdy woman lacking direction and enjoying good times with her girl friends, she wakes up one day smack in the middle of a beautiful life without any recollection of how she got there. Involved in a terrible accident seven years earlier, Lexi has been living a sort of "fantasy" life ever since then -- and now she can't recall any of it.
While the book was light and humorous, I still wanted more depth from the characters. I know not every novel is going to change your life, but I wanted more from Lexi -- and more from her friends, more from her emotionally vacant husband. I just couldn't inhale it the way I wanted to.
Book Review: Not What I Was Expecting Summary: 4 Stars
I've read most of the Shopaholic books, so I was naturally expecting "Remember Me?" to be a funny book. Surprisingly, it isn't. I don't think I laughed at all. The story is kind of flat. Even though the premise of the book is intriguing--the main character has a car accident and loses all memory of the last three years--not a whole lot happens. Also, the characters are hard to relate to. I love Becky Bloomwood of the Shopaholic series because she's quirky and naive. Lexi Smart, the title character in "Remember Me?," is not nearly as well drawn as Becky. I couldn't really relate to her, or to any of the characters. While her gorgeous, millionaire husband turns out to be not-so-perfect, I couldn't see what drew her to Jon. He's a nice guy, I presume, but he comes across as flat, like everyone else in this book.
But despite these misgivings, I'm giving this book 4 Stars because I think Sophie Kinsella is a very talented writer. I also give her a lot of credit for not wrapping up all the loose ends and for not turning this into a happily-ever-after fairy tale.
Book Review: Perfect blend of mystery, suspense, laughter, and romance Summary: 5 Stars
The story draws you in within the first chapter as you join the life of the main character who has amnesia. You meet her husband whom she doesn't remember, her home where there is nothing of hers around, which starts you wondering if he really is her husband. Then his behavior makes you scared for her, as she tries to fit into his perfect mold. You cringe as you join her going back to the office, with her career, that as steps back into she realizes that things aren't as she thought she left them.
Her world is turned upside down, she is vunerable and doesn't know who to trust or whom to turn to. Every page endears you to the life she finds herself in.
A definite page turner that I couldn't put down and when I would have to, I couldn't wait to pick it back up again to see how things were playing out, whom she was starting to trust, had she learned the truth about her past, could she see through the haze, fix the past wrongs, could she put her life back together and be where she really belonged??
Book Review: Another great Kinsella read Summary: 4 Stars
I have been a fan of Sophie Kinsella for years, ever since her Shopaholic books found their way into my life. They were my first experience with Chick Lit, and continue to be the books I use when trying to explain the genre to someone who has no clue.
That being said, Remember Me? was another Kinsella hit. I was a bit skeptical of the plot - a woman who has lost her memory, forced to figure out what has gone on in the past three years and survive the life she created. It sounded as though I would be able to guess the plot changes, but I was pleasantly surprised. Kinsella did a good job of adding in slight twists that urged me to continue reading (rather than assume the same old same old would be happening). I love her writing style, and the ending left me satisfied without being totally predictable. The character development was pretty good, though I did question how quickly some of the previous "friends" changed their attitudes - I haven't been in that particular situation, though, so I can't judge it too much.
Book Review: Quick Read! Lots of fun! My favorite by Kinsella! Summary: 5 Stars
I have read many Shopaholic books, Can You Keep a Secret?, Undomestic Goddess, and a few of her books written under "Madeleine Wickham." Remember Me? is my favorite so far!
At first, I thought the plot would be the same as many chick lit novels-- business woman must find her way to work to the top, fall in love and restore her life. All of these things happen, but it is told in such an unusual, insightful way. Throughout the book, the main character, Lexi, is trying to piece together her life through clues from her friends and family members. However, these friends and family members are not always truthful and often leave out important details. It was so much fun to read a novel where you are figuring out the plot just like the main character is. You feel completely lost, just like Lexi does when she wakes up in the hospital with amnesia.
I read this book in just one day. It was so much fun! I often get tired of chick-lit, but this one was different and a great read!
