Book Reviews of Requiem For An AssassinBook Review: AS THE WORLD TURNS-- ASSASSIN STYLE Summary: 5 Stars
So this seems like the end of the series for Barry Eisler. All great series eventually exhaust their plot lines and characters and eventually have to be euthanized if the author is to protect his reputation and integrity. Our man Rain, the half Japanese/American jui jitsu assassin is semi-retired in Paris. Rain is chillin' like a pimp in his cashmere sweaters. Rain hits all the cafes to feed his caffein habit; and relaxes with a piece of wet, blond, puss from the lovely and available Mossad agent Delilah. Somewhere in Bali, however, a storm is brewing. Dox is a strapping, corn- fed American. He is a deadly sniper. When he fireman carried John Rain out of a deadly caper in Hong Kong the two became the Crockett and Tubs of the assassin world. Well Dox is the weak link here. While Dox is living the life in Bali feeding his large mass, working out, and looking for hot brown tail; he is one step too slow for a team of bad guys who snatch Dox in order to lever Rain out of assassin semi-retirement for a contractual killing spree. Well the writing starts to rise above the mundane. For a little while Rain moves beyond the trite yuppy world of Rains' Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Grand Taille "with a brown leather band" (p55) watch. Eisler draws a dichotomy in Rains' inner soul. There starts to be play between Rain as the Iceman killer-assassin we have come to love; and the long in the tooth with a touch of grey semi-retired yuppy single-malt scotch, espresso loving high end snobby consumer, and puss hound. This is good. It is classic inner soul allegory conflict like Dr. Jeckyl and Mr. Hyde. The action heats up and so does the writing. Rain arranges a meet with Hilger ( the rogue private military contractor) who grabbed the bulky Dox. The meet is arranged in Saigon. The writing is elevated beyond pulp here as Eisler draws a fine picture of Saigon; contrasting the city as it was during Rains' tours In Country with the capitalistic dynamo little dragon it has become. This background is smoothly integrated into the plot line. These memories help explain how during the war Rain evolved into "The Iceman"; a killing machine. This set-up explains why I read Eisler's 5 prior books in the series; and probably helped Barry cultivate his own yuppy tastes for Jaegre-LeCoultre Reverso watches, single malt scotch, cashmere blazers, and Brioni suits. Let's see if Barry can rise above soap opera bubbles for the 300 pages he has left for this last book in the Rain series. Rain has to execute 2 contract killings mas rapido. He dispatches an unwary Belgian in Silocon Valley in record time. The next contract has Rain stalking his victim on the L.I.E. near Sands Point Long Island (Great Gatsby Country assassin style). Coming right up; 2 brutal killings lower east side style. Then it is off on a junket to Jakarta to add some Malaysian spice to Barry's movie deal. The end game is near as Rain stalks the evil Hilger and his posse. Rain cleans things up in Jakarta like there is a new sheriff in town. Then he jets off to Rotterdam to foil a dastardly scheme which will result in higher fossil fuel prices. This should be the end of the road for John Rain. He is ready for the assassin assisted living facility. I have enjoyed the series. It is time to let J.R. RIP.
Summary of Requiem For An AssassinFor master assassin John Rain, getting out of 'the life' was never going to be easy. But with a new identity in Paris, and the help of his lover, Mossad agent Delilah, he was hoping to leave the killing business behind. Then he receives a message from rogue CIA operative Jim Hilger: We have your friend Dox. Do as we tell you, or the sniper dies. The choice ought to be easy: do the job - a series of three hits - and save his friend and partner. But how does Rain know Hilger won't just kill Dox once the assignment is complete? How does he know that each of the hits isn't also a setup for Rain himself? Most of all, how can he control the killing rage that Hilger's lethal game of extortion reignites inside him? From the deceptively tranquil beaches of Bali, to the boulevards of Paris, the urban chaos of New York, and finally to the old killing fields of Vietnam. Rain must grapple not only with his brutal enemies, but also with the latent killer inside himself! a battle that not even Rain can hope to survive intact.
