Book Reviews of Reunion (Redemption)Book Review: A very good series Summary: 4 Stars
I enjoyed this Redemption series very much; it provides a good story line following the Baxter family's trials and tribulations and triumphs. While Ms. Kingsbury is a good writer and story teller, I do not think she is a brilliant writer. Although she provides characters that are interesting, they seem a bit formulaic: The son who stops believing in God because something bad happens; the black sheep of the family daughter who feels like an outcast; the intelligent daughter that believes more in scientific proof than God. When I read Beverly Lewis' 5 book series Abrams Daughters, never once do I feel that she thought up the characters and came up with stuff about them, rather that they are real people that she is merely telling about who they are and what they do.
Ms. Kingsbury did not make the characters all perfect people and who wants to read about perfect people? She did a good job of showing how God was able to change and work in lives. Prayer, faith and listening to God's voice are sprinkled throughout the books in the series.
Woven throughout is the definite impression that these people are beautiful and handsome; not that that is a horrible thing. But in the "That's how Baxter's are, That's what Baxter's do" theme, I felt like the Baxters just wouldn't be the great family they are if they weren't all so beautiful and smart.
Example of stereotypical characters-Candy, her boyfriend and his friend. These characters were depicted as the complete opposite of the Baxters; drug-addicted criminals who are the scourge of society. Candy was written to be a heavy-set, (something none of the Baxters are),drug-addicted low-life, as well as the other 2. Candy not only couldn't remember her babie's name, said "now look what you done, ya brat" and put her to sleep in a dresser drawer. She smoked pot so she could "feel the way it clouded every bad thing about her life. "The weed was working it's magic but who could enjoy a good buzz with a fussy baby?"
Also, Luke's "free-thinker" girlfriend was a bit over the top. Dayne Mathews, the "wild playboy" whom the "assistant director was hot for". The "crazy college kid" who shot Kari's husband Tim". Ashley, the black sheep who "back then, she was always so afraid to love". These are just a few examples.
Reunion gives a poignant account of the struggles Elizabeth has when her cancer returns, along with John and her whole family, as well as her faith in God throughout it. All she wants is to see her family continue to go through the seasons of life, and it is touching. Before she dies, she is able to see come to fruition the things she had prayed for for her children.
It also focuses on daughter Erin and her husband in their struggle and efforts to adopt.
In this book is a sort of poem that Elizabeth wrote for her son Luke that will absolutely make you cry, if you are a parent, for sure! Ms. Kingsbury actually wrote it for her son and used it in the book. It has been made into a chldren's book Let Me Hold You Longer that every parent should have.
All in all, these are good books and I will also read the Baxter series 2 and 3.
