Book Reviews of Richard Scarry's A Day at the Airport (Pictureback(R))Book Review: The book is .. oh well how should I put it.. Scary? Summary: 1 Stars
I guess scary is the word. We needed some book that would somehow prepare our little one (5 years old) to the plane travel and we rushed to the local book store and grabed what they had and this happened to be one of the two choices they had on the topic. I did not think much as I paid for it happy that I secured some book of an author that has good reputation in the children book area.
Little I know what I got into until my little one ask me to read it for bed time the day we bought it.
So here we are.. I am reading the book .. jolly good mood and all..
And all of the sudden I am seeing all those cute scens all over the airport, they look funny to me but I think again as my little one is about to notice every single detail and being super observant as they are at this age
and quite sensitive to that.. I will have lot of explaining why:
1. Two airplains are crashing into eachother (passanger jet liners) in the background of one of the major scenes..
2. Why all belongings as in suitcases are bing tossed into the airplane and some of the crash on the ground
and everything spills out of them (yeah one of them you can see right there on the cover, just take closer look as one kitty is loading the suitcase on the belt and suitcase go south and all the stuff spills out.
3. Why the sutcase are bing opened in the little transporters that carry them through the airport grounds and how the suitcases have the stuff flying out of them..
4. Airplain without wings and other major parts being scaattered around in haphazard manner like seats and all..
to suggest that the plain can just.. oh well.. loose it's wings.. what however not true for airliners as they are apparently build around their wings and you can't just detatch them like from little planes but still..
would you like your little one to worry that the wings can just go kaboom during the flight?
There is more.. much more of this type of humor. If you and your little one has stomic for it or the kid is old enogh to take it as a jocke then defenetely go for it.
I however myself not necessarely like to think about plain crashing at the airport grounds.. and all those other things abouve and I would have major explaining going on so we just somehow reverted the attention and gave up the book successfuly but I think should we continue it would be more damage then good actually.
I can't really imagine what mr. Scarry was thinking puting such images in a book that is designated for little children and does not worry a inapropriate images warning.
How do you explain a child that a plains do crash on the runaways, or the luggage yes.. get tossed and things do
fly out sometimes..
Of course this is true and there is potential to happen but then again is this how a parent immerse a child into
airport situations?
I have no words, If you can just stop by at the book store and look at the ilustrations and look carefully before you buy, or order it so you can return it if you decide it is not for you.
I wish you happy deciding and I am sure knowing that at the end the rather questionable flying contraption of
a hot dog that eventually crashes at the house at the end will make it that much more comfortable.
I shared, you decide.
Summary of Richard Scarry's A Day at the Airport (Pictureback(R))Sally, Huckle, and Lowly are supposed to go sailing with Huckle and Sally's father, but it starts to rain. Father says they will have to stay inside and play, but their friend Rudolf von Flugel saves the day when he picks the kids up in his airplane-car and whisks them off to the airport for a fun day of sightseeing. Full of airport fun and "Scarry" mishaps.
