Book Review: Can't be beat for practical information

Rick Steves' books are ones I always make sure to take with me - and read before - visiting Italy. His guides are loaded with the kind of practical information you need to make the most of a vacation visit, and the Rome edition for 2009 was no exception to this rule.
Rome is a simply immense city with more sites to see than any tourist can take in on one trip. It is also a city where it is important to plan itineraries in advance as some museums and attractions will require reservations--or passes purchased in advance can help you avoid wasting hours in line. "Rick Steves' Rome" did a great job helping us with this kind of practical information, such as buying a Roma Pass as soon as we arrived and how to make the most of them by visiting the most expensive sites (with the biggest lines) first. His guide was also great for covering some of the scams one can come face-to-face with in Rome, several of which we ended up encountering first-hand: illegal taxis at the airport, fake "tour guides" at the Coliseum, etc. He also will give you helpful information on visiting the Vatican and other museums to maximize your chances to beat the crowds and enjoy the experiences better.
On the minus side, some of his hand-drawn maps are not the most useful nor easy to read, and he doesn't always cover things in great depth. For one, I found his section on visiting the Roman Forum too brief and not very helpful while we were there. For an art buff or historical enthusiast, you'll do well to bring another guide such as the Knopf or Eyewitness Guide for more detail on various sites, small churches, and museum collections.
But again, this is still a book I was very glad to have with me while in Rome and I would recommend it wholeheartedly to any other travelers as one they should definitely take with them.
