Book Reviews of Roseflower Creek: A Novel

Book Review: DO NOT MISS THIS BOOK! SAD, SWEET, & TOTALLY ENGROSSING!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

Meet ten year old Lori Jean, a sweet, kind, caring, loving little girl living in Georgia in the 1950's. All Lori Jean wants is a "normal, loving family". Who could ask for more?

What she gets is her drunk, mean as a snake, abusive, loser step-father, Ray. Her mom, while she does love Lori Jean, doesn't have the time or the brains to show or tell her little girl she loves her or cares for her. On the upside, Lori Jean has in her life her Meemaw, Uncle Melvin, Aunt Lexie, and her best friend, Carolee. These four people mean the world to Lori Jean and they are a close group.

Narrated by Lori Jean, we find out about her totally depressing life -- living in squalor, white trash, no money, no clothes, no love shown to her -- yet -- yet -- this sweet little girl who you will fall in love with is ALWAYS happy, always looking on the bright side. And what it gets her is murdered.

Narrated by Lori Jean AFTER she is brutally beaten to death, she takes the reader back through her life. Lori Jean tells of the trials and tribulations of growing up dirt poor, yet she finds the good in everything and everybody. Along with her Meemaw, aunt and uncle, and her friend Carolee, she tells her life story. You will be laughing and you will be crying.

This is a well written book dealing with a truly sensitive subject. No one likes to hear of child abuse, let alone it ending in death, but this is one book not to be missed. It is a short, fast-reading book, and I highly recommend it. You will continue to think of it long after you have read the last page.

Lori Jean's life is one of hardship and many, many ups and downs. Do yourself a favor and read this remarkable book. You will be glad that you did.

Thank you!

Pam

Summary of Roseflower Creek: A Novel

"A powerful book. The characters haunt the reader long after the last page is turned."
Earl Hamner, creator of The Waltons

"The morning I died it rained. Poured down so hard it washed the blood off my face."

Thus begins the story of Lori Jean, whose short life and early death are woven into this worldly-wise novel set in the rural South of the 1950s. Told from the point of view of ten-year-old Lori Jean, a sensitive dreamer of a child who longs for a "normal" family, Roseflower Creek boldly explores the dynamics of a dysfunctional Southern family. Abandoned by her father when she was five years old, her world consists of a weak-willed mother and an alcoholic step-father who can't?or won't?keep a steady job. Yet Lori Jean is filled with the curiosity and hope common to all children.

After Lori Jean's step-father, Ray, begins attending AA meetings, he seems like a changed man, and Lori Jean begins to think that finally she and her mama are going to experience some long-overdo happiness?to be a real family and "git ourselves one of them futures, just like regular folks." But when Ray returns to his former ways and Lori Jean uncovers his secret, everything begins to spin out of control and she pays the ultimate price for what she knows.

Humorous, yet poignant, Roseflower Creek is a story of the loss of innocence and the power of forgiveness. Above all, it is a tribute and a testament to the human heart's ability to heal. Told with an honesty and authenticity that only a child narrator could achieve, it is a remarkable novel that will move readers long after the last paragraph has been read.
