Book Reviews of Rules of Prey (Lucas Davenport, No. 1)

Book Review: Poorly written in parts, gets good when story picks up
Summary: 3 Stars

This book shows that, in his years as a journalist, John Sandford learned a lot about the relationship between police and the media. Unfortunately, the story is lacking at times, and the reader has to slog through lengthy portions of procedure talk - the book ends up with a lot of dialogue-heavy scenes that may sound impressive and official, but the story stands still. That said, at times when the plot picks up, it's much more enjoyable. Didn't get much out of the computer game subplot. Unnecessary character over-development. Really liked the ending. Clever writing.

Book Review: Great start
Summary: 4 Stars

I got started on this series by reading a couple volumes that have been released in the last three years or so. I decided to go back to the beginning and see how Davenport started out.

It was nice to see where the money came from and that he began as a tough guy. As with the other books I've read, I'm not wild about his main girlfriend/wife. The game development detail adds a lot to the character and how he works.

The hunt for the maddog kept me hooked. There's nothing quite like the take-down of an obnoxious jerk, for a satisfying read.

Book Review: I Wish I Had Read This One First!
Summary: 5 Stars

I've read a few of the later books in the Prey series and really liked them. As with any good series, they are best read in order. That isn't to say that the books in this series can't stand alone, because they can and they do it well. But the first book gives more insight into Lucas Davenport, his habits and his many not-by-the-book ways. From reading this one and comparing it to the later ones, it is interesting how the character has grown and evolved, at least in his personal life. I look forward to reading more of the earlier books in the series.

Book Review: Finally--a book you will not put down just because you bought it!
Summary: 5 Stars

This is an excellent book...about eighty percent believable and hard to put down. I loved the characters; they were fun and Davenport is a very clever character who is fun to watch--a great coniver. I just finished several other books of the same genre, and they could all learn a lesson from Sanford--if you want a book to read that will not keep you wondering when a plot is going to develop; or why the characters are not dimensional--read this book!

Book Review: Very outdated by today's crime methods
Summary: 3 Stars

I decided to read the first of this series before buying his newest book. It is very difficult to read a crime book written in 1989, over 20 years ago, in 2010 after CSI, etc. There are no cell phones, people use pay phones on the street, no computers, no DNA evidence, etc. I know this book was true to its time, but it is hard to take it seriously today.

Not sure whether I will take a chance on another Davenport book.
