My mother told me I'd enjoy this book and lent it to me. I won't say I didn't enjoy it to some degree - I kept reading, at least - but the book felt rushed, as if the author hadn't fully thought it out.
I didn't find the characters or the circumstances believable, and enough with the magical negro, which both the girl and the mother continually threatened to become. The only believable character in the book, in my opinion, was Sullivan, and I would have much preferred to read a book about him. The rest of them were either flat or fairy-tale perfect.
I feel like the author wrote this in a flurry of ideas and really she needed to put her first draft away for a couple of years and then come back and make it into something much better.
