Book Reviews of Run for Your Life (Michael Bennett)Book Review: Run from this book Summary: 2 Stars
Run For Your Life is the long awaited 2nd book in the Michael Bennet series and it starts off with Michael taking care of a hostage negotiation. It goes horribly wrong and he goes home only to find out that his entire family has caught the flu. It gets worse when the next day he finds out that he has been put in charge of finding the latest killer in New York city who calls himself The Teacher and is out to give us a message.
The story was pretty boring, especially because Patterson just rehashed the same tired ideas that he has. In the first book, his wife was deathly ill and in this book, his entire family is. The Teacher wasnt very original and was the typical Patterson killer: an insane guy who more than likely has family issues that goes around killing people simply because he can. He says that hes trying to teach us a message but when we do finally learn it, it really doesnt make much sense, especially when he seemingly kills random people. The way he does kill them is simply farfetched in almost every conceiveable way. For one of his first kills, he walks into a clothing store, shoots the guy about 5 times with and un-silenced pistol and walks out. Seeing as how this is New York city, it would probably make sense if someone outside on the busy sidewalk would have heard this but of course, no one ever does and the only person that did see it was some guy sitting in the back room. The entire book follows the same pattern as well: Teacher kills someone, cops are baffled as to how he did this, Michael is angry and investigates, goes home to his family to watch them throw up, repeat.
The worst part about the book was probably the beginning. During the hostage negotiation, he convinces the 19 year old punk to let his family go because EVERYONE watching this happening is basically saying stuff along the lines about how hes awesome and cops are the devil. When the kid does come out, his family makes a ring around him and informs the cops that theyre not letting them do anything to the kid. Now Ive heard of Stockholm Syndrom before, but this is just rediculous. Hes trying to KILL them and they feel the need to protect him. Michael goes up to the kid and sort everything out when suddenly a sniper (who isnt a cop and is never identified in the book) shoots the kid in the face and the 87 year old grandma goes completely ape-**** on Micahel, calling him a liar and proceeds to beat the crap out of him. How an elderly woman managed to beat up a highly trained cop in his thirties makes no sense to me. Oh and when all of this happens, the entire city of New York instantly hates the NYPD and for the rest of the book calls them child-killers which shows how idiotic everyone is.
Michael himself wasnt being very smart ethier. The entire time he just acted like your generic cop from any other mystery novel and doesnt really manage to do much either in helping the investigation. He also shows how stupid he was twice by sitting on a chair completely covered with grape jelly and lately sticking his foot in an bathtub which is obviously full of vomit from his kids. Another stupid thing he does is send his kids to school while they have the flu so they can infect everyone else. Plus he cant take the obvious hint from his kids nanny that she likes him.
In conclusion, the book was pretty bad, however its getting 2 stars because it was alot better than the dreadful time of bad books Patterson made last year, specially the huge disappointment that Cross Country was. The first book in the series(Step on a Crack) was alot better than this because it was unique for not being simply an investigation but it was hostage situation, something that I have yet to see for any other book. Unfortunately, the Michael that I knew from the previous book has changed drastically because he's basically the Alex Cross of New York now. If you must read this book, wait for paperback, otherwise I would completely avoid it.
