Book Reviews of RunBook Review: Loved Falling Into This One! Summary: 5 Stars
What a delight, after trudging through quite a few books this summer, to begin this book and find myself completely falling into it, and without any effort at all. I had forgotten what wonderful fictional world Patchett can weave, ready to catch me as I fall in, pulling me along, strand by strand, as she fleshes out her characters, and unfolds the storyline. Taking place over just two days (with just a few backflashes, and one fast forward section at the end), I read this novel as fast as it unfolded. Two nights of reading and I closed it with a sigh. What a completely satisfying read. Highly Recommended!
Book Review: DISAPPOINTED Summary: 1 Stars
THIS BOOK WAS GIVEN TO ME BY A 96 YEAR OLD LADY TO READ. SHE LOVED IT. I HAD JUST FINISHED THE, BOOK THIEF, AND HAD BEEN TRANSPORTED TO ANOTHER TIME OF COURAGE AND BRAVERY DURING WW11 IN GERMANY. THIS BOOK, RUN, WAS NOT IN THE SAME CLASS. I FELT THAT I HAD READ SOMETHING BEAUTIFUL IN THE BOOK THIEF. NOT SO MUCH HERE. I HAS HOPES FOR RUN BUT IT NEVER GRABBED ME. I DID NOT FEEL ANY LOVE FOR ANY OF THE CHARACTERS. IT WAS A BOOK I HAD DIFFICULTY FINISHING. WHEN I KEEP LOOKING TO SEE HOW MANY PAGES OF PUNISHMENT I HAVE TO ENDURE BEFORE I FINISH, I KNOW I AM NOT HAVING A GOOD EXPERIENCE.
Book Review: Ann Patchett can do better than this! Summary: 3 Stars
I really enjoyed Patron Saint of Liars and Bel Canto. This book was interesting and I liked the potential of the characters. I found Uncle Sullivan tedious at times and Tip too when he'd go on and on about fishes - but there are people like that - I just don't want to read a detailed account of his obsession.
I still enjoyed the book. I liked Kenya, Teddy, and Tennessee. While some coincidence is fine, this book seemed ridiculously full of them. The book was fairly fast-paced and I wouldn't rave about it but it was still worth the time.
Book Review: Not bad, also not that great Summary: 3 Stars
Even though I told myself not to read other reviews before writing mine - I read several of the other 3 star reviews. I have to say I agree with most if not all of their criticisms. I do appreciate a well-written book by an obviously smart, talented writer, but Run is something I would put in the category of "quick read", just engaging enough. I was very surprised and am still puzzled that Ms. Patchett called the book a "political novel" in the discussion included at the end. For me it was definitely about family, in a kind of 3-hour-special made-for-TV way.
Book Review: a little disappointed... Summary: 2 Stars
Granted, my expectations were unfairly high since I very much liked Bel Canto several years ago. I thought Run was a bit shallow, in terms of story line, character developement and general scope. I realize it took place in a 24-hr. period but, if an author is going to use that sort of time device in a story, he or she better pack those 24 hours full of stuff to keep me interested. To sum up, I did not have a hard time putting this book down. I've never read her other books besides Bel Canto, so I'll have to give those a try instead!
