Book Review: Running Hot is a slick, super-heated, twist of a wild ride!

If you like romance and science fiction, you will enjoy Jayne Ann Krentz's Arcane Society novels. Wrapped inside every compelling romance there is a sci-fi thriller. The Arcane Society Series satisfies my appetite for both. The installment titled 'Running Hot' is an action-packed tale in the series. Everything written on the flyleaf is true. I believe if Hitchcock were still around, he would have made it into a film. That is why I liked it so much. This book follows the same type of formula that Hitchcock perfected: putting ordinary people in extraordinary circumstances. In this case, an ex-cop & a librarian looking for an operative of Nightshade, the nemesis organization of the Arcane Society. As it turns out, these people are far from ordinary. I liked the super-hero vs. super-villian angle as well. I also liked the fact that nothing in this book is wasted space. I was hooked into the story in the first sentence. The story opens with a murder scene that reminds me of 'Strangers on a Train,' where the murderer is incapable of feeling remorse or guilt. The protagonists are thrown together, an unlikely partnership of opposing politics much like Cary Grant and Ingrid Bergman in the film 'Nototrious.' Like all Hitchcock films, spies, hidden agendas, romance, poison, murder and unlikely villains fill the pages. The end of the story isn't an end at all, just a pause before diving in to the next Arcane Society saga. What a great movie this book would make! What a great series!
