Book Reviews of Running Injuries: Treatment and PreventionBook Review: Brief and Fairly Effective Discussion of Injuries in the Galloway Format Summary: 5 Stars
If you are familiar with Galloway's books, you will find the style of this book familiar. Galloway's strength is that his books are straight forward, economical, not a lot of jargon, usually plenty of pictures and he gets to the point quickly. This book follows that format with the exception of numerous pictures. Don't expect extensive discussion of specific injuries but Galloway and fellow author Hannford provide an informative, direct and a very helpful review of injuries in a format familiar to most running injury books by categorizing injuries under specific body parts. After a very good, short, introduction on why injuries occur and how to prevent them, the book leaps into the chapters and then into subcategories that list and define specific injuries. Each discussion of injuries remind me of medical cards because the discussions of each injury is headlined by color coded sub titles; such as the name of the injury, location of pain, description of pain, basic anatomy, causes, treatment, pearls (sort of good news/bad news things to do not to do, example: Achilles tendon pain, heel lifts but no stretching) when to stop training and consequences of running/walking through pain. I have found the book an effective source to help diagnose injuries and to get a very good idea on cause, the anatomy involved and in particular, treatment. I would have preferred more graphics or pictures with diagrams of the injured area since there is only one general picture at the start of each chapter and none specific to an injury. However, this is offset by the reasonable price and quality details on injuries and treatment. One demonstration of the up to datedness of the book is the section on over the counter medication like NSAIDS (non-steroidal like Aleve and Advil). The authors bring up a valid point that NSAIDS can interfere with healing when they are being used too long beyond the acute stage. The down side, there are no listed references, when referring to studies; there are no footnotes or references in the back of the book, that is part of the economy of a Galloway book. The last part of the book features some relatively familiar Galloway tips such as his Run-Walk-Run training method and a quick summary of running tips ranging from hot weather running, shoe width, pronation etc. Overall, a very good book in simple terms. I give this book 5 stars because of its broad references that includes detail on hamstring injuries, particularly ischia tuberosities, that is lacking in a number of highly recommended running injury books. So, a lot of information on virtual all possible running injuries. In addition, the treatment recommendations are paying off for my current injury, which required more patience but is working.
