Book Reviews of Sail

Book Review: Sail? Hardly...
Summary: 2 Stars

As a seasoned mariner, the title immediately caught my eye and I bought the book. I have sailed extensively and crossed oceans in small boats. Never fun but always an adventure. It appears to me that Patterson has never spent any time at sea on a small boat. His descriptions of emergency things is all wrong. First a sea anchor is set when the weather turns foul and isn't used otherwise. Second, bilge pumps are made to be submersible and therefore run underwater. Third, a breach in the hull is always patched temporarily from the outside so that the pressure holds the patch in place until more permanent repairs can be made. Fourth, playfully heaving a person overboard at sea without a harness and means to reboard is most definitely dangerous. Fifth, nothing is ever mentioned about sails in "Sail". Did they motor for the entire trip. ...but then I am a die-hard sailor and offshore racer, not a murderer or thief.

Book Review: A VERY PLEASANT SURPRISE ....
Summary: 4 Stars

I was relunctant to purchase this book after the disappointment of the last Patterson/Roughan collaboration ..... "You've Been Warned", but I was very pleasantly surprised and actually had a hard time putting it down until it was finished. I would have given it 5 stars except for the following two reasons:
1. Not very plausible, ie, a tuna that swallows a coke bottle with a message in it; a compound fracture that is not treated for quite an amount of time and the infection mysteriously goes away, etc. (but that is why we call it fiction).
2. Unnecessary appearance of the ghost of Katherine's former husband did nothing to enhance the story.

Other than that it was very enjoyable, fast paced, the 3 children are right out of today's dysfunctional families and very believable; and, the bad guys got what they deserved at the end. A great read for the beach or a rainy weekend day.

Book Review: Great summer thriller especially if you're a sailor
Summary: 4 Stars

I'm not a James Patterson fan, but I'll devour anything on sailing and the sea; and so as an airport pick-me-up this is great. Patterson and Roughan have strung together a fun quick paced love story turned murder mystery that can be read in a couple of evenings.

Maybe a little too soapy for some, it tells a good sailing story and wraps in the normal dysfunctional family (the soaps!) in a fun tale.

I was drawn in by the cover, the development of the bad guy is wonderful, and even the love scenes are splendid - something most thrillers can't seem to do any better than 'Guy Noir, Private Eye' on Prarie Home Companion.

If Patterson and Roughan rewrite Moby Dick I'd pick it up, but it would still only be a light summer read. I'd like to know how they got together on this.

A great book for the beach!

Book Review: A swing and a miss
Summary: 3 Stars

James Patterson has written some memorable thrillers but Sail seems to be written by a ghost writer who is new (or tired) of the genre and pushed to this book on the masses using the Patterson label. Don't get me wrong, this is a quick and easy read, but the characters never seem to grasp the readers interest. The scene is set when the dad is killed in a sailing accident and the family tumbles into chaos. The mother is a character that should have been written out of the story. The dialog seems to date back to the Twenties and the characters are all flat. Does this sound like the Patterson we know? I've given it three stars but could easily understand someone giving it one star - what I can't understand is someone giving it five stars. Unless you just have to read everything Patterson...I'd say skip it and wait for Patterson's new book.

Book Review: Gripping...
Summary: 5 Stars

When I think of the word sail, I think of placid waters, a blowing breeze, and a gentle lull of the water as it slaps against the hull. (I admit I have never been sailing and have romanticized the sport).

In James Patterson's latest book Sail, the sea and voyage is anything but placid. What began as a vacation that would pull her family closer together quickly turned into a nightmare. I have never been a fan of Patterson. I was pleasantly surprised when Sail quickly captured my attention and held it all the way through.

I eagerly turned the pages in this epic size novel. There were enough twists and turns throughout the book to remind me of a back road in Kentucky. The suspense in Sail is incredibly thick in this book. Readers will quickly connect to Sail.
