Book Reviews of Sandworms of Dune

Book Review: Hunters and Sandworms of Dune - awful
Summary: 1 Stars

Although I enjoyed Herbert/Anderson's other Dune spin-offs, Dune 7 and 8 are simply trash. These 2 books fail on so many levels that I wouldn't know where to start: lack of any characterization, repititious, hurried, just awful.
Although I believe that Frank Herbert left an outline for sequels to Dune 6, that doesn't necessarily mean Brian Herbert and Anderson used it. Frank Herbert wasn't the kind of writer to have giant robots marching around smashing humanity and I believe the Butlerian Jihad was a revolt against computers on a cerebral/philosophical level and not literally evil robots. Siona's rite of passage in the desert with Leto in Dune 6 suggest otherwise and it is far from clear. Maybe Stan Lee, Jack Kirby and the Fantastic Four would have created such monsters but not Frank Herbert. These books are a mess; even comic books have more nuance.
Bringing back the panoply of characters from the first 6 Dune books served no purpose whatsoever. They are ill-done as characters with no depth whatsoever or purpose to fulfill.

Book Review: The original vision for Dune is now complete
Summary: 5 Stars

This book Sandworms of Dune, coupled with Hunters of Dune were based on an outline left in a safe desposit box by Frank Herbert before he died. Two decades later, his son Brian and author Kevin J Anderson take this outline and produce a fantastic, stunning, and at times mindblowing conclusion to Frank Herbert's original Dune storyline. Like all Dune fans, the ending of Chapterhouse left me scratching my head saying 'is this all?', knowing full well that the author had passed away. Being able to read this book and see the series concluded in such a profound way was exciting to say the least. Many have criticized Brian Herbert and Kevin J Anderson for falling short of the prosaic vision and authorship of the original Herbert. I for one am glad to see the series finished and done well. Consider this a necessary read for all Dune fans, I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Book Review: A travesty
Summary: 1 Stars

Dune was the most brilliant science fiction novel ever written. It transcended and reinvented the genre. The entire series written by Frank Herbert was fun and intelligent. I picked up this and Hunters at the same time with the understanding that they were an attempt at continuing the series. Dune 7 and 8. Well, simply put, they're not. The idea that this garbage was based on some secret manuscript left behind by Frank Herbert is a joke. It's one thing that the writing is embarassingly bad. But the main ideas simply don't adhere to the world created by Frank Herbert. There are probably thousands of genuine Dune fans in the world who could have written a better finish to the series. It's a shame that Frank's son hired such an awful writer to milk his father's talent and legend. This stuff is shamefully bad.

Book Review: Good Mind Candy
Summary: 3 Stars

I know a lot of reviewers did not like this book, but I did. I enjoyed reading it and I did not worry about whether it held true to Frank Hebert's original or whether things did not make sense in comparison to other previous books. Too me, it is just good science fiction/fantasy. I call it "good mind candy". It is pleasurable to read, but is not a history book or a book that will make you a better person. There is no reason to read this, other than it is a fun book to read. And in that respect, I enjoyed it. If you are detail oriented, remember everything Frank Hebert wrote, and have expectations of exactly how this should be written, then it may not be for you. But if you want something that generally follows all of the other books about Dune, then you will enjoy it.

Book Review: Bad.....Yep, Bad.....
Summary: 1 Stars

First -- they stretched one book over two. Bad move -- makes for a drawn out slow read. Second, it's just not that good.

There are a lot of opinions comparing Brian and Kevin to Frank Herbert. It's not fair -- Frank owned this material and he nailed it. Brian and Kevin are tackling someone else's work and, while I have enjoyed their other work, it does show through.

I would love to see the 'notes' and 'outlines' that are credited as being the base for building this book. I enjoyed the prequels and like the tie-in back to that. Maybe Frank intended something similar, mabe he didn't -- it doesn't matter at this point. I'm glad they tackled it. Unfortunately, it devolved into silliness related to the characters they brought back, etc. Oh well .....
