Book Reviews of Saturn's ChildrenBook Review: Fun sci-fi with a bit of depth Summary: 4 Stars
Pros: Well written, a main character that is interesting in some ways, the plot is fun but the novel also has just enough depth to interest.
Cons: Ending is a huge letdown, many of the characters are hard to empathize with, not as sexy as marketing might lead you to believe.
"Saturn's Children" takes place in a world where humans no longer exists, but where the robots that they created keep on behaving as if they did, taking great care to realize all of humanity's grand dreams. The novel's protagonist, Freya, is a sexbot who was created to love and worship humans, but as the all the humans are dead she struggles to find a sense of purpose and self worth.
This book often resembles a fast paced action novel with Freya travelling all around the solar system, kicking butt and delivering mysterious packages for mysterious entities. Despite this, there actually is a serious message buried in this book dealing with slavery and free will.
Freya herself is generally a well developed character. The way that her desire for love and purpose in her life competes with her desire to be in charge of her own destiny is fascinating to watch. The other characters (who are all robots) show varying degrees of humanity and it is always interesting to see what the author does with them. I do think that the author has the unfortunate tendency of reminding us that the characters aren't human at the most inconvenient and crucial moments which sometimes makes them hard to empathize with, however. In the sex scenes, for example, we are constantly reminded that Freya is a machine which makes them very unsexy -- unless you find sex between your blender and your toaster a turn on. It is also somewhat hard to empathize with characters whose main goal seems to be preventing the continuation of the human race.
My biggest issue with this book, however is the ending. Without giving too much away, it is like the book doesn't even have a climax and the author just decided to stop and tack on a cheesy epilogue.
Still, in general, this is a well written science fiction novel that is both fun to read and engaging. 4 stars.
