Book Reviews of Say GoodbyeBook Review: "Every Goodbye Makes The Next Hello Closer" Summary: 4 Stars
An arrested prostitute calls FBI Special Agent Kimberly Quincy claiming to have information for her. Deliah Rose tells her that a wealthy john is taking street prostitutes and lets his poisonous spiders crawl on them and engage in other dangerous activities. She states that her friend Ginny was with him and has vanished. Delilah has found Ginny's boyfrind's school ring, that Ginny always wore on a neckless around her neck. The ring was in the john's car. She wants Agent Quincy to stop him.
Kimberly's associate, Sal Martingnetti, informs her that he's also worried that someone is picking off hookers. Twice he has had the driver's licenses of three women placed on the windshield of his car. But, no bodies have been found so it's difficult to get his superiors to permit him to mount an investigation. Even though Kim is five months, pregnant, a time when most women might begin to take things easier, she decides to work with Sal to attempt to stop the person responsible for his crimes against the prostitutes.
One night, they follow Delilah down a street where they know that Ginny's boyfriend was shot. Then, Kim realizes that Delilah is really Ginny. Ginny admits it and tells them that she calls the john Dinchara, a play on the word arachnid, because of his fetish with spiders. When Dinchara first took her, she realized that he got a kick when someone showed fear so when she didn't scream when he put a black widow spider on her, Dinchara let her live. He does make her turn tricks and once per month, he meets her and gets a pay off.
Kim and Sal must find a way to stop Dinchara and get enough evidence to arrest him. Then they find that he has a teenage boy helping him and is also grooming a younger boy. Now their mission is to stop Dinchara and rescue the boys.
The author knows suspense and has provided a story that will keep her readers turning the pages with anticipation. The characters are well described and the antagonist was truly evil, not only doing terrible things to people but training young children to help in his crimes. This well done novel will keep Gardner's fans coming back for more.
Book Review: I agree with other reviewers, Gardner went too far Summary: 4 Stars
Lisa Gardner's SAY GOODBYE stands out among all the novels I've read as having the most haunting, hard to read sections I've ever seen. I've read a lot of mystery/thriller/crime novels involving serial killers. They are a lot of fun, and offer some sort of escape from reality as we read about an evil killer eventually getting caught by the hero of the novel. In Gardner's novel, the hero is interesting, but nothing groundbreaking. She is Kimberly Quincy, a 5-month pregnant FBI agent who begins working with a Georgia Bureau of Investigation agent that believes a serial killer is killing prostitutes. That is standard plot stuff. No problem there.
As with most good serial killer novels, Gardner also writes from the bad guy's point of view. Except in this book, there are a few points of view from the bad guys (that all make sense in the end), and one is from a little boy, about seven, that is kidnapped from his peaceful home by the Burgerman. The scenes of violence and torture and sexual abuse the little boy is forced to endure was hard to read, especially since I have a boy that age as well. And, I just read a few other reviews and see I'm not alone in this opinion. The VERY sad thing is, Gardner is probably 100% right in her portrayal of abuse and its victims.
I kept reading though, because Gardner had me hooked. I wanted the bad guy to be stopped, and I wanted the victimized children to be okay. You'll have to read to find out what happens. But I believe Gardner does a great job of scaring the reader into understanding that evil exists and we must do everything we can to keep our children away from it. You can never go too far in protecting your children.
I've already started another Gardner novel and plan on reading more. She's a good author and writes characters with depth and creates plots with plenty of twists and turns. She is quite comparable to Karin Slaughter, except her characters are actually allowed to be happy.
Book Review: Not her best storyline Summary: 3 Stars
I agree with most people on their opinion on this book. It was a very hard read, very graphic, extremely disturbing. If you have kids, I don't recommend it, but at the same time, it's good to be aware of what really goes on in the world. You can never be too careful, never have too many locks on your house. I didn't give the book 5 stars, not because of the sore subject, but mainly 'cause I don't like Kim the character. And I didn't really love the ending. But I had times when I had to put the book down, because I got very disturbed and emotional. I've never read a book so detailed on child's abuse. It also showed me what probably happens to most of those kids on Missing Ads. If you have thick skin, you can read this book. But honestly... Save yourself the sleepless nights - I, for example, couldn't sleep for a couple of nights. Lisa Gardner has MANY incredible books, that won't leave you feeling like the world is just a big gateway to hell. I still can't forget the Burgerman. That awful name is plastered to my brain now.
I like the fact that Gardner had the courage and patience, to write such a dark book. Not a lot of writers have that kind of confidence. Some of us need a reminder that the world isn't just a big playground. There are awful things happening everyday, everywhere. So if you wanna skip the images, read some of her other material.
Book Review: Disturbing, but so is life Summary: 5 Stars
I commute 100+ miles per day, so I listen to a fair amount of books. I definitely agree with the readers that call this book disturbing - because it truly is. The problem is that there are multitudes of predators out there and to not be aware of them means we open ourselves up to them.
Here in California we just found out that one such predator held Jaycee Dugard for 18 years. That little girl had 2 children by that monster - yet she did not leave. I don't know that we will ever know why she did not leave - but she didn't.
Such was the mindset of Mr. Dinkara, he didn't leave the man that abducted him. Instead he became just like his abductor - and then some. The twists and turns in the plot are very well done. The story line is frightening - I think it is more frightening that it could actually be true - probably to a greater extent then any of us mortals realize. Thank you God - for not letting something happen to my children!!!!
The epilog of this book talks about Scott, the young boy that Mr. Dinkara abducted last. I think it is commendable of the author to show that not all young people that are abducted become disturbed individuals. Some of them take what has happened to them and apply it in other ways. They try to help others that also get exploited, kidnapped and tortured.
Book Review: one of my fave garner books. Summary: 4 Stars
I notice that some reviewers feel that Lisa Gardner's book "Say Goodbye" was too graphic too dark... they didn't like it...welll ya know what?........ I LOVED IT, It's about time she has expanded the horizon. I have only read the quincy novels, and as awesome as they are... she plays it a bit safe. MURDER IS GRAPHIC, it's not tame, it doesn't spare our emotions, if you are reading a book that has to do with murder theres a chance it will be graphic and maybe even offend you.. why? BECAUSE MURDER IS OFFENSIVE. I really loved this book, I loved how you didn't know which character was the victime, I liked the little twist at the end. My only real complaint was the very last 2 pages of the book. I felt that all the characters went through hell and then some, it was nice to see one of the characters make it through and I thought that maybe the character might one day find peace in their lives, I thought this character didn't fully get corrupted ans had a good heart but then it turns out the character is vengeful and might possibly turn out to be the very same thing that had turtured him, it was a downer, but then again... so is murder. To Lisa, if you see this... keep doing what you're doing, it's awesome.
