Book Review: My Father's Lasting Memory

I am a brand new quilter. I have never taken on this type of challenge before or even thought of it until my father passed away on March of this year, at 93. He was a retired Commander in the Navy and a pilot and he left behind a closet full of very nice shirts that I have a lot of fond memories of his favorites that he would wear. My mother and I just did not have the heart to give them away, so I decided to take as many as I thought could be used, to make a "memory quilt" for his first great-grandchild that was born in September. My first grand child, will never know personally, her Great-Grandfather, so this "memory quilt" made out of my father's shirts will be a special gift to her. I came across the book "Scraps" by Judy Martin and have had a wonderful time reading it and starting to work on my "memory quilt". I can not get over the ease of this book for a beginner like me, very easy to understand and lots and lots of color pictures to show you what to do along the way, including the supplies that would be needed. There is not much left of the shirts that I have cut into squares and I can not wait till I can lay the pieces out to make a design and put it together. Along the way, I have also found the book "Scraps & Shirttails: Reuse, Re-purpose, Recycle! The Art of "Quilting Green" by Bonnie K. Hunter. Both books are excellent and complement each other. When you work with both of these lovely books, you can't go wrong. Enjoy and happy quilting.
Summary of Scraps
Scraps features 16 new and original Judy Martin designs. Every quilt is presented in 3 sizes so you can make the design you like in the size you want. You are given your choice of accurate rotary cutting instructions or templates. Fat quarter requirements and yardage are listed for every quilt in every size. Color diagrams show piecing details. And every pattern is rated for ease of cutting, ease of sewing, and ease of thinking.Perhaps the greatest challenge with Scraps is in deciding which quilt to make first!
