Book Review: very practical and well-written

The second edition of "The Self-Sufficient Sailor" was published in 1997. For the sailor with loads of modern electronic gizmos, this book may seem out of date. Still, it is very much worth the effort to persevere and read this well-written and interesting text. Because the ideas of simplicity and good sailcraft are essentially timeless, this book will still be useful to sailors far into the future.
In 304 pages, Lin and Larry Pardey give sage and practical advice about a huge range of topics that are very important to sailors. They discuss the social aspects of sailing together with family and crew, the beauty and safety of keeping a boat simple, and numerous useful details about repair and maintenance.
I especially enjoyed the section on sailing without an engine. Larry and Lin give a good description of sculling oars, rowing oars, and even using an anchor to move the boat in tight spaces. There are good diagrams and even photographs.
They finish with a short philosophical discussion about self-sufficiency. They are not preachy, but they do argue their case well. Whether or not you agree with the Pardeys completely, you will find much food or thought in their very useful book.

This book is what the title says. It is the distillation of what the Pardey's have learned in 150,000 miles of sailing on board their two cutters, Seraffyn and Taleisin, and on scores of other boats they have delivered or raced. Lin and Larry tell how they have sailed in comfort and safety without large cash outlay- on a pay-as-you-earn-as-you-go plan and by simplifying.In its first edition, this invaluable text has seen nine reprints.
