Book Reviews of Separation of Power (Mitch Rapp Novels)Book Review: Very satisfying political thriller Summary: 4 Stars
As the third installment of the Mitch Rapp series, Separation of Power by Vince Flynn is something that you really shouldn't toy around with. Its high tension and political intrigue gives off high adrenaline, and its sense of political corruption is purely frightening. As a fan of political thrillers, I enjoyed this one very much. The plot and the characters are strong, as is the powerful suspense that surrounds the entire book. And speaking of characters, I can't help but admire Mitch Rapp, Irene Kennedy, and Robert Hayes. These three characters, despite a couple of cliches involving their personalities, are always likable. Even if they make mistakes, there's nothing but sympathy towards them.
The novel has plenty of flaws, unfortunately, and that's why I cannot give it a perfect grade. Congressman Albert Rudin is an example of a cardboard cut-out antagonist. His personality is way over-the-top, and he almost predictable from the very beginning. Also, the romance between Mitch Rapp and Anna Reilly has its sappy moments, and some of their dialogue sounds like it's coming straight from a soap opera. The first quarter of the book goes along in a slow pace, while the story's ending is a bit too foreseeable.
But despite those flaws, I still enjoyed reading Separation of Power. It has everything that you would expect from a political thriller: action, suspense, drama, and of course, political intrigue.

As the story unfolds, the president, Kennedy, and Rapp find themselves under assault from unknown forces in Washington and from afar. Senator Hank Clark, the chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, has gained the president?s confidence and is immersed in a complicated plot to bring the president?s term to a premature end. To make matters worse, the president is confronted with a crisis in the Middle East involving nuclear weapons. The Israelis have given the president two weeks to take the bombs out, or they will do it themselves. In a race against the clock, Rapp navigates the treacherous alleys of Baghdad and the just-as-hostile streets of Washington, defeating his enemies at every turn, and leaving his customary trail of bodies.
