Wowie! A Page-Turner LOL Vampire Tale
It's been two weeks, and I'm still drawn to re-reading parts of this
book. Throughout the day, I *still* lapse into daydreams of Adrian....
MacAlister's Moravian vampires (a.k.a. "Dark Ones") are simply rawr!
(This is my first book by K.M. - immediate addiction.)
Adrian, the Betrayer, finds Nell, a gifted charmer posing as an
assistant history professor of UW, in the middle of Christian's
mansion. Nell has been hired by another vampire named Mellisandre to
save her nephew (from the demon lord Asmodeus); she's poking around
Christina's mansion searching for clues to help her in her task.
Immediately, something special happens between Adrian and Nell. A
telepathic link forms between them, which is unusual, as only
Moravians (or their Beloved) can do this. Nell's ability to see the
patterns underlying curses and wards also becomes evident, as she
notices the curse binding Adrian to the demon lord Asmodeus. Although
he is immediately attracted to Nell, Adrian kidnaps her in hopes that
she might break Asmodeus' curse.
Clarification note: Moravian vampires take on one Beloved who redeems
their soul. Vampires are born to unredeemed vampires; humans can be
converted by being enslaved by a demon lord. Beloved, howevers, do not
become vampires. They become immortal, though, as the vampire who
makes them becomes dependent on their blood. The Betrayer is a cursed
vampire who drags (against his will) other vampires into enslavement
by the demon lord Asmodeus - hence his name.
Adrian drags Nell to the underground tunnel through which he breeched
Christian's mansion. Daylight approaches, and our vampire needs his
beauty sleep. And then... this part just has to be read first-hand. I
was so overcome with that mellow-ly feeling - and no, this isn't even
one of those hot steamy scene (which this book has aplenty). Merely
falling asleep (clothes on, of course - they're on icky dirt, for G's
sake!) underneath a ton of castle, cuddled (for warmth) by a
broad-shouldered strong vampire hottie.
Adrian has some enemies, who nearly kill him. But, Nell tracks him
down with their telepathic link and manages to summon up a ward to get
away. The train ride away towards a dinky hotel room where Adrian
keeps his -- gasps -- toothbrush and shaving tools... well, things
start getting steamy.
But, Adrian initially refuses to make Nell his Beloved - but, he
becomes certain she is his Beloved, the woman whom fate has decreed to
be the only one capable of redeeming his soul.
So anyway, after a few nifty adventures, they wind up in the
presidential suite of a brothel for ghosts, quite freely offered by
Gigli, the knocker of Haus V. Mmmm.. steamy, but fate had to carry out
its course, as Nell takes Adrian's blood to become his Beloved.
No, the story doesn't end there. But, since I'm not allowed to give
away spoilers, that's about all the plot preview I can give.
Anyway, this is a must-read for any vampire fans. (Especially
Buffy/Angel fans. Rice fans might find it a bit low-brow, with
vampires bounded by their Beloved, but the LOL scenes [and Nell's
appropriate ditziness] totally make up for it. But then again, this is
*Romance* so that vampire-becomes-*her*-sex-slave-part was totally
necessary.)
Jackline Hunter's SOYAI (Sum Over Yummy's And Ick's)!
Yummy's
+ "vampire ventriloquist" (when Adrian telepathically communicates to
Nell without mouth motion)
+ excellent choice of vamp names. Adrian sounds so totally vampy.
+ "Beloved" instead of anything to do with the word "mate"
+ the way Nell argues for Adrian - how his sins as Betrayer don't
really count, since he was bound to Asmodeus, and it was all against
his will.
+ Adrian calls Nell "Hasi" after their first time. "Hasi" is German
for love-bunny. Adrian's form of "punishment" = wild bunny XXX.
+ Adrian, the totally-evil vampire Betrayer, feared by all, the
heartless, souless,.... has dimples!!
+ House of the Lubricating Jelly (in German, since this is set in
central Europe). You'd have to read it for this one...
+ the mummies!!! just so totally random, yet delightful (and even
cute!). and so funny when Damian thinks they're like Imhotep and can
be used to suck the souls out of people o_O
+ wards drawn by painted fudge
+ Nell's own past history relation with Asmodeus adds great depth to the story.
+ Nell's flippant attitude towards vampires (even those who're out to get her).
+ Adrian's reaction to Nell's flippancy
+ the presence of characters from her other novels (Christian and his summoner)
+ "bun ability" said by a vampire.
+ Adrian's eyes change color when Nell touches him - he's like "a
giant mood ring"
+ Gigli's bouncer. you'd never expect little old lady's to be so buff
(and to have had such a life history).
+ the fact that Nell solved all the major problems through brilliant
insight. except one of the last one, where a macho man's brawn was
required.
Ick's
- the ending kinda mellowed out in the bad way. i'm still not sure if
Nell died and dreamed up a happily ever after ending or if it really
happened that way.
- the fact that a vampire's Beloved smells like rotten blue cheese to
all other vampires
- at first, Nell's refusal to want to charm again seems a bit shallow.
- reference to Beth's aunt as a noted figure in "Asian Wicca" ... not
sure if such exists. Wicca, an ancient art of the Druids, is limited
to European heritage. Asians would probably practice Tao Ching or
something like that.
- the backcover doesn't really make sense... i guess "charm school"
makes for a good pun, but it is a bit misleading.
- possibly a few plot flaws... the fact that Adrian did not know that
he could be used to tap into dark souless evilness to cast curses
makes him a bit near-sighted.
total: 17 - 6/2 = 14... way more than 5 stars -- a total must read!!!
Summary of Sex, Lies and Vampires (The Dark Ones, Book 3) Are you responsible for lifting a centuries-old curse from the sexiest vampire you?ve ever seen? Does a demon lord want to destroy you? Have you somehow inadvertently bound several mummies to your soul? Are you the last hope for a lost little boy? If you?ve answered ?yes? to any of the above . . . you?re in big trouble! Those are a few of the problems facing Nell Harris, a real charmer?no, really . . . a real Charmer?once she hooks up with Adrian Tomas. A devastatingly hot Dark One who?s earned the unfortunate title ?the Betrayer? for selling out his own kind to a very nasty demon, Adrian needs Nell in the worst way. Though she?d be way better off keeping her distance, Nell can?t help but find this tormented, undead Betrayer dude just a little too tempting. And this time her penchant for bad boys might cost her more than her heart . . . but her immortal soul as well!
