Book Reviews of Sex for One: The Joy of Selfloving

Book Review: Engineering review
Summary: 4 Stars

While talking to the author about designing and marketing a medical device to assist women to exercise their pelvic floor muscles, Betty recommended that I buy this book to learn more about the anatomy and physiology of the female orgasm, and how the device I am designing might play a role. Betty writes from her three decades of experience teaching "selflove" to many women and some men. But it wasn't until page 157 that I found the relevant information. Betty was part of the early efforts in liberating women's thinking, and her stories of that effort are fascinating. She writes well, and makes her story interesting. I had hoped that there would be more clinical information that I could use for the product design; that is the only reason I subtracted one star. If you are expecting an instruction book, this isn't it. But if you want to learn about the emotional and sexual history of one pioneer of the sexual revolution, buy this book.

Book Review: Highly instructive material
Summary: 4 Stars

Although some of the language used in this book was the sort of language which would normally have upset me, the author made it clear why she wrote as she did. The information was so valuable to me that I wrote to both Dr. Dodson and my own physician concerning several aspects which would have improved my physical and psychological well- being. This is a book that should be passed from mothers (and fathers) to both sons and daughters as a mean of taking away the fear and insecurity attached to the subject of masturbation. In addition to discussing masturbation the author also discussed self-loathing of one's body resulting from a lack of information about what constituted normality in form. I wish someone would have had a similar book available when I was growing up so that I could have read it before I was in my seventies.

Book Review: Good for Overcoming Masturbation Anxiety
Summary: 4 Stars

I am very happy that this book exists, because masturbation should not be pushed aside in sex books as easily as it is. It did not teach me anything new, however. If you love your body, are sexually confident, and have never had any physical or emotional issues with masturbating, then this book is probably redundant. The author writes the book by describing different periods in her life, and how her own sexuality evolved. She also describes how she taught a type of "sex therapy group" and what she learned from her students. It is an interesting book to own, and if you are in any way uncomfortable with your sexuality it would be a good book to read. (If you are over-comfortable with your sexuality, it's always fun to have books like these on your shelf!)

Book Review: More than meets the eye
Summary: 5 Stars

I first read this book nearly five years ago, and as a man I can honestly agree the autobiographical info was a bit dull. And the mechanical information didn't seem that earth-shaking either. But somehow tucked into this little book is a very simple yet powerful combination of permission and basic vibrator know-how that allows pre-orgasmic women to finally "get it." I should know, my wife of 12 years finally after trying everything we could think of, felt something. And that something quickly turned to orgasm, and in short order she was reliably orgasmic.

There is nothing so joyous as the smile on a lover's face the very first time she cums. I'm a believer and Betty rules! Only thing better than the book are her videos.

Book Review: Amazing
Summary: 5 Stars

Don't listen to the people putting down this book. Whereas it may not be the book for everyone, it has certainly helped a LOT of people, including me! I was unable to orgasm my whole life. I am 23 now, and I had my first orgasm last year, by myself. And it was because I read this book. It is a very interesting and wonderful book. Betty Dodson is a great individual for writing this book. Mastubation may not be as taboo as it once was, but for some people it still is. As for someone saying it doesn't offer help for people who cannot have orgasms, that's nonsense! It helped me! I am sure it has helped many others too. So yes, this is an important book. I suggest you read it if you are like me. I am making up for lost time now ;)
