Book Review: inspired by an historical incident

Shiokari Pass was inspired by a real person who sacrificed his own life to stop a runaway train before it could crash and kill everyone on it. Miura's style of writing is simple and straightforward to begin with, but I would have preferred an English translation that wasn't quite so starkly simple in vocabulary and sentence structure. While the main plot (with lots of soul-searching and some tender romance) is gripping and thoughtful, the book is also interesting from historical and cultural perspectives, as it effectively describes various kinds of friction between the social classes, as well as the horror with which much of Japanese society regarded the "foreign religion" of Christianity at one time. Decades since it was first published, Shiokari Pass continues to be one of the two most beloved works of Ayako Miura, a best-selling Japanese novelist. The other one is Hyoten (Freezing Point), the award-winning debut novel that set off a nation-wide social phenomenon called the "Hyoten Boom" in the late 60s.
