Book Reviews of Shoe Addicts AnonymousBook Review: Unputdownable and entertaining! Summary: 4 Stars
Lorna Rafferty is addicted to shoes. So addicted, in fact, that she is knee-deep in credit card debts. The bank's assistant manager has made it his personal mission to try to help her out with her debts. But with her waitress job and limited budget, not to mention her newfound obsession with eBay, she doubts she'll be able to kick her habit any time soon. Helene Zaharis is also addicted to designer shoes. In fact, they are her lifeline. Retail is the only form of therapy that works with her insufferable life with a senator husband who has an eye for the presidency. His cheating ways are no secret to her. How will her life change when her husband suddenly takes away her credit cards? And who's following her all over town and why? She has secrets she doesn't want revealed -- for the sake of her husband's political career as well as her own need to keep the past at bay. Sandra Vanderslice hates the outdoors -- hence her lucrative job as a phone sex operator. It helps buy her beautiful designer shoes. But is she happy with the status quo, especially when she is reacquainted with an attractive former high school friend? The rubenesque shoe lover will want to change her life. And Jocelyn Bowen doesn't care either way about shoes, but when she discovers Shoe Addicts Anonymous, it is the perfect escape from her nanny job from hell. As it happens, it is Lorna who begins Shoe Addicts Anonymous by placing an online ad, a meeting where women who share the same shoe size (7 ½) can get together and exchange shoes. Little does she know that starting that little group is the best thing that could happen to her and to the three women who show up to the meetings.
This is a great, addictive read. I couldn't put it down and enjoyed it to the max. At first, I thought this would be a book with very little substance, about women who love shoes and nothing more, but the four heroines are well fleshed out and real, with actual problems and concerns. You will relate will all four of them in one way or another. I for one have an addiction to spending (especially books), so I enjoyed Lorna's plight. If only things worked out in real life the way it works out in these books though! One thing I do complain about is that the story seems unfinished. Who was the man Sandra spoke to on the phone, the one who may or may not have been a transsexual? And was he the one who showed up at one of the meetings? That was never answered or resolved. Anyway, other than that, Shoe Addicts Anonymous is the perfect antidote to a boring day. You will be sucked into the story. Beth Harbison is a great author. I've already picked up Secrets of a Shoe Addict (which may or may not be a sequel to this one) and look forward to giving it a whirl.
Summary of Shoe Addicts AnonymousFour different women. One common shoe size. And a shared lust for fabulous footwear. Helene Zaharis?s politician husband keeps her on a tight leash and cancels her credit cards as a way of controlling her. Lorna Rafferty is up to her eyeballs in debt and can?t stop her addiction to eBay. Sandra Vanderslice, battling agoraphobia, pays her shoe bills by working as a phone-sex operator. And Jocelyn Bowen is a nanny for the family from hell (who barely knows a sole from a heel but who will do anything to get out of the house.) On Tuesday nights, these women meet to trade shoes and, in the process, form friendships that will help them each triumph over their problems---from secret pasts to blackmail, bankruptcy, and dating. Funny, emotional, and powerful, Shoe Addicts Anonymous is a perfect read for any woman who has ever struggled to find the perfect ?t.
