Book Review: Planning a wedding has never been this much fun!
Summary: 5 Stars

The past few years have been quite trying for twenty-something London-ite Rebecca "Becky" Bloomwood. First, while writing for a financial magazine, she realized that she shouldn't actually be giving innocent bystanders information on saving money, because, oddly enough, she was unable to do so herself. And, in fact, was a shopaholic putting herself into more and more debt by the minute. Then, after snagging the gorgeous, rich, successful Luke Brandon - the owner of Brandon Communications, and a professional money-saver - Becky left her friends, family, and flat in London to try out the Big Apple aka Manhattan, where she was introduced to the idea of sample sales, and met some fabulous new people who were destined to become her new friends. But, alas, during the trip to Manhattan, not everything was smooth sailing. In fact, after having photos of her succumbing to her shopaholic ways published in various tabloids, Becky lost her job as a financial consultant on a hip TV show, and almost found herself back on a plane to England, sans the love of her life, Luke. Becky, of course, managed to set everything right in the end, but now things are going crazy once more.

While attending her best friend Suze's wedding, Luke pops the big question to Becky, throwing her for a loop, and setting off the biggest wedding planning fiasco in the history of marriage. Having longed for this moment since Becky was just a tiny tot, her mother begins planning the most adorable, quaint wedding of all time in Oxshott. Without truly consulting Becky, that is. Enlisting the help of her friends, Becky's mother plans on painting Becky's face in a truly garish way, and forcing her to wear a frumpy, frilly, lace monstrosity of a dress - the same lace monstrosity she wore on her very own wedding day. Becky is horrified at the prospect, but, wanting to spare her mother's feelings, she goes along with the ideas.

Back in Manhattan, however, there's another wedding being planned. This one by Luke's estranged, cold-hearted mother, Elinor. Elinor's idea of Becky and Luke's wedding is that it shall be the event of the season. The be all end all of weddings. The production will take place in the grand Plaza hotel, and have a Sleeping Beauty theme. Becky's guests will dine on thousands of dollars worth of cake, and over four-hundred people will attend the gala. It sounds like an idyllic way to get married, but Becky can't help but feel that it's more of a wedding for Elinor, as opposed to herself. After all, she hasn't been called upon to contribute much to the planning side, and more than half the guests in attendance are Elinor's personal friends. People Becky hasn't even had the chance to meet. As the day gets closer and closer, Becky can't help but feel that, perhaps, the Oxshott wedding is more her style. But with a lawsuit looming over her head, and the inability to tell her mother, and Elinor, that both of their galas are scheduled for the same day, on separate continents, Becky feels herself wanting to do nothing but scream for help. The fact that Luke has just discovered some disturbing news about Elinor, and seems to be in the throes of a midlife crisis only add more pressure to Becky. And, if she doesn't sort things out pronto, she may just miss the most important day of her life.

It is impossible not to love Becky Bloomwood. She's compassionate, kind, humorous, and beyond lovable. Since CONFESSIONS OF A SHOPAHOLIC, Sophie Kinsella has made Becky's inability to rationalize, and see the error of her ways when purchasing various bizarre items - from inflatable canoes to plant spritzer's - a laugh-out-loud funny conundrum that is not only memorable, but utterly irresistible. As always, Becky takes on the role of resident funny girl. She finally has the job she's always wanted as a personal shopper at Barney's, and she's made some true American friends who are always great for a good laugh. The musings that take place within Becky's mind on just about every page are hilarious; while the various letters consisting of bank statements, faxes from her mother, and so much more are impossible to resist. Luke's mother, Elinor, plays a larger role within SHOPAHOLIC TIES THE KNOT, throwing her weight around left and right, and insulting Becky to no avail - even though she seems oblivious to it. Her constant demands of Luke make you annoyed at times, as the way he cowtows to his mother makes the reader feel as if he has no spine. However, the fact that he's Luke makes up for it. His debonair style, and intelligence work to reinstate his manliness, and make it impossible to dislike his character. Suze, unfortunately, is seen very rarely within this installment, considering she's on a different continent. However, the "best friend" position as promptly been filled by Danny, a struggling fashion designer who has a flair for the dramatic, and the ability to get into as many mix-ups and mishaps as Becky. While he's not as rational of a character as Suze, he does manage to provide some humorous moments, and his ridiculous musings and meltdowns work as one to make him a lovable new character. Kinsella has obviously done her research regarding wedding planners, for the boisterous, frightening, demanding Robyn provides such depth in each and every one of her scenes, and certainly gives the reader an inside view of the planning world - and just how confusing and time-consuming it truly is. Once again, Kinsella has penned a delightful installment into the world of Becky Bloomwood - one that you refuse to escape until the last page has been turned. Planning a wedding has never been this much fun!
