Book Reviews of Shopgirl: A NovellaBook Review: Loved It! Summary: 5 Stars
Shopgirl is a five star novella. The characters are so incredibly developed and described that I felt as though I knew them personally. Mirabelle suffers from depression, works at the glove counter while daydreaming about working the perfume counter and is unlucky at love. One day Ray Porter stops at her counter to buy some gloves and ends up with Mirabelle's heart. From the start of this relationship, I wanted to warn her against him, "he's just using you!"
I was hooked from the very beginning and wasn't able to put this little book down. Even when I was finished reading, I sat with the book in my lap and thought about Mirabelle and how in real life we would probably be friends.
Book Review: Seriously? Summary: 2 Stars
I bought this book because I like Steve Martin movies and the reviews raved about this. When I got the book, I thought it was going to be a quick read. I was wrong. It took me about a week to get through it. The writing was elementary and, well, blah - much like the characters. I was a bit confused about Mirabelle's personalty and unclear about the Dad's friend role. Also, Ray Porter was sleeping with someone who he came to think of as a daughter...?? A bit disturbing.... I never laughed, not even cracked a smile. Maybe I just don't get the dark comedy.
I liked the ending because it was finally over. Sorry Steve Martin!
Book Review: Shopgirl Summary: 4 Stars
Personally I didn't know Steve Martin could write so well. The book was insightful, relateable, playful. Steve Martin is a man of many talents and I quite hero-worship him now. As for the writing style, I'm not sure how else to describe it other than to say that it's masculine. Almost every sentence in the book is very short, to the point, and matter of fact like it's written from a man's point of view. I found it a bit depressing even though it had a (supposedly) happy ending. Yet I found the characters to be very endearing with all their imperfections. They grew on me. If you liked the movie then the book is a definite must.
Book Review: Amazing novella! Summary: 5 Stars
So I watched the movie firstand I loved it. There was something so captivating about the words used in Steve Martin's narration. I eventually saw this in the library and thought it would be a great idea to read it.
I love every minute of it... you can really feel Mirabelle's loneliness. And I have a couple favorite passages in the book... Steve Martin's choice of words is remarkable. I also love how it doesn't have that typical storybook romance.
Ah, would totally read again! I also would like to read Steve Martin's new one.. i think its called An Object of Beauty? Can't wait to start reading it!
Book Review: MARTIN'S SECOND BEST Summary: 4 Stars
Along with Pure Drivel and Cruel Shoes this ranks as Martin's best work. The economy of worse useage here is astounding. Most authors would've taken this subject matter and plot and turned it into some 500 pg opus. Martin instead churns out a fast read novella.
I think Martin is one of the great writers of our time. It's hard to beleive this is the guy who used to perform with an arrow through his cranium.
