Book Reviews of Shopgirl: A NovellaBook Review: How did he do it? Summary: 5 Stars
When I was reading this book, it was difficult to believe that it was written by Steve Martin, comedian and star of SNL. It is just so different from his comedy books (although those are great as well). I read this when I was the same age as the character and I just kept wondering how Steve Martin could know exactly how it feels to be a twenty-something girl looking for her place in the world. Pretty amazing! It is now one of my favorite books. The movie was nothing in comparison, so don't be deterred if you didn't like the film. The book is completely different and a million times better.
Book Review: Surprisingly good Summary: 4 Stars
This book completely changed my perception of Steve Martin. I guess I was caught up in the 80s when he was the kinda wacky comedian of cyrano de bergerac or whatever other off the wall comedy he was in during the 80s. Who knew he could write. I heard about the movie first, watched it and feel in love with it. As a woman of that age... I really related and couldn't believe that that wacky comedian was able to write a woman so well, to really understand what we really want from men. I decided to read the book and loved it even more. This book was extremely well written, loved it.
Book Review: Simply nails it! Summary: 5 Stars
Couldn't sleep one night. Turned the TV on and caught the movie. When I first saw Steve Martin as the lead actor, I went looking for something else to watch but I ended up back watching the movie. I kept watching with what I thought was, mitigaged interest, however it is only at the very end that I realized how caught up I was in the story... by that time, I was crying my brains out. I love it when a movie manages to capture your heart without you knowing it... Claire Danes is out of this world! I loved this movie...even if I really REALLY really didn't want to.
Book Review: Great Read Summary: 5 Stars
I felt this book was outstanding. Steve Martin's neat and compact novel is able to evoke a wide variety of emotions. I genuinely cared about Mirabella and I didn't always like, but understood the male characters. All are fully realized neatly and concisely. Steve accurately and sometimes bluntly captures their human qualities. His characters are fully developed and real. He does in a few words and a straightforward style what many, more verbose authors, cannot.
Book Review: A wonderful story Summary: 5 Stars
I was so impressed with Steve Martin's writing in "Born Standing Up," I was eager to delve into his fiction writing. I was not disappointed. I can't explain it, but somehow I feel smarter having read this book. The language and structure of the writing is very well thought out. The story is strong, the characters are relatable; this is a very realistic story, with a realistic conclusion, and realistic emotions. Makes me want to see the movie now.
