Book Review: A mile wide and an inch deep

This book was a gift from my ex-wife - thank you. I had never heard of Stuart Woods, though I do often read and enjoy mysteries.
I want to compare my experience with "Short Straw" with my readying "Brass Verdict" or "The Lincoln Lawyer" by Michael Connelly. The lead character of both authors is a lone-wolf lawyer. Both lead characters have had failed relationships. That's about the only similarity, other than that both lawyers face uncertainty, hazard, and adventure in the journeys of their stories.
Connelly's characters are human. They express fear, concern, hope, despair. Those of Woods express nothing. Occasionally the stress of a situation causes them to vomit; then Woods' story continues. The characters in "Short Straw" interact for often-unknown reasons, but they never have relationships or display reasons for what they do.
But the story is pretty good. If you're not looking for characterization or scenic description in a novel, Woods writes well. There is no mystery to "Short Straw." Early on, readers know who did what. The two reasons for reading the book are to find out how it ends, and I can't think of what the other one was. But, I enjoyed the story; I was pulled into the action. Some scenes were unusual and interesting. The dialogue was "snappy." I just bought from Amazon the prequel to "Short Straw," "Santa Fe Rules." If you're tempted to read "Short Straw," do yourself a favor and read "Santa Fe Rules" first.
The way to read this novel is when your internet collection is slow and you have a few minutes while files are downloading. The book has about 400 pages and 40 chapters; one for each file download.
