Book Reviews of Simply In Season/Out of Print (World Community Cookbook)

Book Review: A great place to start
Summary: 5 Stars

I got this book about a year ago from the recommendation of a friend, and I have used it several times a week since. Between this book and Barbara Kingsolver's Animal, Vegetable, Miracle, the eating habits of my household have completely changed. We used to eat out quite a bit and when we ate at home, I honestly was guessing at what to do with the veggies I'd gotten at the farmer's market. My husband and 13- and 3-year-old sons were pretty wary. I can't say that they ALWAYS do backflips when I put a meal on the table now, but things are pretty different. I made my first-ever bread from scratch (Oatmeal Molasses) from this book and watched my family scarf down the entire loaf before my eyes. My husband can't stop raving about the chicken I made the other night (Maple BBQ). And my sister, who's always been critical of my cooking, couldn't get enough of the cornmeal pancakes I made for our Christmas brunch (add blueberries, which isn't in the recipe!). She finally had to concede that I've become a good cook! I'm watching my family eat butternut squash bars, broccoli and other greens with the very-easy-to-make stir-fry sauce, and pumpkin bread. Right now I'm soaking a bowl of oats in buttermilk to make the "hearty oatmeal pancakes" in the morning. I started having so much fun (and success) in the kitchen that I've gone from one Community Supported Agriculture box per month to five.

In fairness, I read the least pleasant review of this book and the reviewer was accurate in saying that a good number of the recipes have dairy and wheat. Fortunately, that's not a problem for our family, but if it is one for yours, then this probably isn't the book for you.

With that said, however, if dairy and wheat aren't a problem, I think you'll really enjoy this book. It has a fantastic section in the beginning that gives a snapshot of just about every fruit or veggie in the book, with important tips like selection, storage and handling, preparation, serving suggestions, and nutrients. Then the book is broken down by season, and the last section is items that can be made year-round (dairy, dried beans and fruits, meats, tofu/tempeh, and whole grains). Importantly, the recipes are very easy to follow. I have a stack of cookbooks that I don't use because I find them difficult to navigate. But this one I've come to grab almost daily to see what I'll be cooking up, now more to my family's delight than to their horror!

Summary of Simply In Season/Out of Print (World Community Cookbook)

Not so long ago most fresh food on North American tables came from home gardens and local farmers markets. Today, the average item of food travels more than a thousand miles before it lands on our tables. ItÂ?s a remarkable technological accomplishment, but has not proven to be healthy for our communities, our land or us.

Through stories and simple "whole foods" recipes, Mary Beth Lind and Cathleen Hockman-Wert explore how the food we put on our tables impacts our local and global neighbors. They show the importance of eating local, seasonal foodÂ?and fairly traded foodÂ?and invite readers to make choices that offer security and health for our communities, for the land, for body and spirit.

Simply in Season offers a starting point encouraging you to feed both your body and spirit with nutritious food and challenging ideas about the world around you. Woven throughout the recipe pages of each season are writings, tidbits of information to reflect upon while the onions saute, the soup boils, or the bread bakes.
