Book Review: Focus more on relaxation than on what ails us...

In the industrialized world, we are in the midst of an obesity crisis, with all the corresponding effects on our health. In Simply Well: Choices for a Healthy Life, authors J. Travis and R. Ryan hint at solutions, discussing diet and exercise.

But the majority of this book is on other "wellness" issues:

- the creative use of sound ("Chat or hum to get your energy vibrating" (p. 171).

- using water for health ("Showers are also great for washing away the accumulated tension and worries of the day as they relax your body and break up the psychic residue left by the negativity of others with whom you have interacted during the day" (p. 90).

-feelings ("Give them over, along with the rest of your life, to a higher power" (p. 45).

Obviously, this is the 'New Age" approach to wellness: using silence, meditation, stretching, and massage.

Don't get me wrong. There is a time and place for techniques that reduce stress, that motivate you for getting through a day or a week, and that prepare you for developing muscle mass and losing weight. And there is information about these issues in this book. It's just that they are not the primary emphasis. A happy and relaxed obese person, with a pre-diabetic condition and bad knees, is still obese. Is this wellness? I recognize that we all have different triggers to motivate us to begin on a pathway for improving our health. Clearly, Travis and Ryan are promoting their way. And nobody will be hurt because of it. But I sense the result would be a lot of happy people, still with significant health problems (I'm thinking of the humans in the movie Wall-E as I write this).

Bottom line? Just make sure this isn't the ONLY health-promoting book you read.
