Book Reviews of Skeletons at the Feast: A Novel

Book Review: Another Enthralling Holocaust Story but from a Different Perspective
Summary: 5 Stars

Written from the perspective of a non-Jewish girl in a middle class farming family. How the holocaust effects her family, the family business, and the relationships she makes along the way. Especially a romantic relationship with a POW. Intertwined with this is the story of a Jewish boy impersonating a Nazi soldier and female Jew on her way to the death camps. A very good and compelling book. Bits of information I haven't heard before on what it was like in the death camps and the horrors of every day life there.

Book Review: Not your standard good vs evil war story
Summary: 5 Stars

A stunning book from the opening few pages. Like no other book I have read, Skeletons makes you understand there are always two (or more) sides to a story. Written from the vanguished point of view, the story telling is mesmerising and totally believable in its graphichness and gritiness. A must read if you you want to feel the pathos of victims of a conflict they had no involvement in, but were drawn inevitably into its centre... would give it 6 stars if I could.

Book Review: All all around favorite
Summary: 5 Stars

This book not only portrays life during Hitler's reign, but it does so in the context of a love story and through the eyes of a non-Jewish German family. The story is unveiled through the voices of different characters and the pace is fast enough to keep your attention but not too fast to lose the importance of the historical setting. The intriguing love story is just a small piece of this well-written novel. I recommend it to men and women of all ages!

Book Review: A different look at the holocaust
Summary: 5 Stars

I am a huge Chris Bohjalian fan, and this book was one of my favorites. It was not a typical holocaust story, but rather a love story, a tragedy, a coming of age story, and an exploration of human nature all in one. It provided me a fresh insight into the many lives that were touched by the holocaust, while giving me a renewed sense of reality to this horrific time in history. I highly recommend this book.

Book Review: An unusual book, and a wonderful one
Summary: 5 Stars

As someone who is interested in history, I was excited to read Skeletons at the Feast. I had never read a novel set in Germany at the end of the war, featuring a cast of mostly Germans who were forced to flee the invading Russian army. This book illuminated the price we all pay for war, regardless of whether we are the victors or the vanquished. A vivid story, an excellent read.
