Book Reviews of Skeletons at the FeastBook Review: Powerful and passionate Summary: 5 Stars
As a lover of World War II fiction, I couldn't wait to begin Skeletons at the Feast. This was an incredible reading experience. The characters were so well drawn and the setting so painstakingly recreated, it was as if I'd been transported back in time and walking a journey with people that I knew. The unflinching descriptions of the horrors of the end of a war will stay with me for quite a while, I'm sure. Definitely recommend this one.
Book Review: Wonderful Summary: 5 Stars
After the first few pages I was unsure if I would like this novel, but it turned into a compelling and fast read. That fact that this story is based on true events makes it all the more believable. I was surprised by the ending, but some form of hope is offered in the epilogue. While the German people may not have suffered the horror that the Jewish people did, this novel illustrates that no one came out of that terrible war unscathed.
Book Review: Involving story with characters to care about Summary: 5 Stars
In the waning months of World War II in Europe, the German Emmerich family makes their way across Poland and Germany in an attempt to escape the Russians. On the way they are helped by the mysterious Manfred, a German soldier who has seen too much but seems to belong to no specific army unit. This book has an involving story and characters to care about--but its real strength is its evocation of the brutality and randomness of war.
Book Review: Bohjalian's best yet! Summary: 5 Stars
I've been a Chris Bohjalian fan for quite some time now, but this is his best book yet! It gripped me, right from the prologue, and I simply could not put it down. Set during the last months of WWII, it follows the lives of very believable characters as they struggle to survive and find some hope during terribly difficult times. I highly recommend this book, even if the subject matter is not something you normally read.
Book Review: Skeleton's at the Feast Summary: 5 Stars
I am in the middle of reading this wonderful book. Again Chris Bohjalian has written a book that one cannot put down. The characters are rich, the history amazing. It certainly makes one think about what it was like to live through this war in this part of the world. He captures the horror, the anguish and the will to survive. I would highly recommend this book along with anything else that Chris has written.
