Book Review: Fear Not, Skinny B**** is Here!!
Summary: 5 Stars

I loved this book because of the way it is written not in spite of it. I have read many books with similar messages, and frankly this one did not have as much 'meat' to it as some of the others, but my point is that the way they delivered the message has a chance of affecting people that wouldn't hear the message otherwise. There's plenty of books on veganism out there for those who are interested. I think this one helps get the thoughts flowing through minds of people who might not normally read that type of book.

Granted, the tone is harsh......Yes, the girl on the cover is But the point is they are saying things in this manner to get your attention, make you laugh, and make you think about what they are saying. They come right out and say more than once that they don't care about being 'skinny', that it is more important if you are healthy. I think the people who are upset over this haven't read the book all the way through and don't have a mindset to appreciate their writing.

I found myself laughing out loud when I first picked it up and was hooked. Like I said, if you are already convinced you want to be a vegetarian/vegan and want a book with lots of content and details to back your decision, you might be better off with another book. But, for the person who is trying to eat healthier and is being introduced to the idea of veganism for the first time, I think this is a great introduction and way to make people think.

As for the references being unfounded--these girls are quoting the same mainstream resources that most of the other books I've read on this subject are quoting. I didn't read anything that seemed outlandish considering I've been exposed to these facts before. No, I didn't personally do the research, and it's possible that these people are wrong. I have just decided to take my chances - it's better to risk being wrong and have cleaned up my diet and become healthier than it is to make fun of this thinking and then find out later that it is in fact safer and healthier to be a vegan.

I summarize to say that the negative comments are mostly based on fear. Finding out that everything you thought was ok might not be is scary. Fear that maybe you can't depend on your food supply to be safe. Fear that you might need to consider making some sacrifices in order to be healthier and to lessen the negative impact of your existence. Many, many people aren't ready to think these thoughts and they shouldn't read this book. If you want a good laugh while having someone push the boundaries of your thinking, read this book. If you can't lighten up, you won't like it. If you're like me and are already considering making changes and just need a little shove in the right direction, these girls will give it to you!

Book Review: Interresting
Summary: 4 Stars

As I have read a lot of the other comments I would like to make a couple points. After I say it is an interesting book. It contains some good points, some nutritional information, and information on the meat & dairy industries, along with the FDA, USDA, etc. It also gives you brand name foods to try. If you don't want to hear this stuff. Well then don't pick up the book to read it. Some people may think its a waste of time. If you know anything about nutrition or the slaughter industry then it might be because it is basic information just broadened a little.

Yes this book may not be the best book written on dieting or new lifestyles and yes some of the language is kind of explicit. It is wrote in a comic/ sinister way but the title kind of told you that. If you read the title of the book "skinny bitch" You should have pretty much caught on. If not, skim it before you purchase it then you might know what its about.
As for the nutrition of animal products including meat itself. If you study our bodies anatomy or know a good deal about health or nutrition or looked into physicians schooling you would notice a couple of things that yes even the writers care to point out in their book and what more people should know. 1. Physicians don't have a lot of nutrition training. Its not as little as the book may state (Depends on what school the doctor attended). You need to know nutrition, go to a good nutritionists. (Check their academics and who they are connected to.) 2. Our bodies make a very small amount of lactate which is what digests lactose. When we are toddlers we loss the ability to digest lactose. 3. Look it up or ask someone who might know.. Our bodies are made totally different then carnivores. Our intestines, stomach substances, teeth, and many other parts of our bodies are like omnivores. Does anyone know anything about nutrition and body function? In animals or humans? If not you shouldn't be purchasing a book about dieting or a lifestyle change. Don't hurt yourself.... Rather lone your brains... If you can't comprehend a better way of life just because it doesn't include meat that shows how shallow, selfish,& ignorant people really are. Get a book and try to LEARN something instead of cutting it down because they talk about meat and try telling you why it isn't good for you. You learn what you let yourself .If you don't like getting rid of something your going to make up any reason to keep it. That's how you become unhealthy. Being over weight, skinny, or perfect it doesn't say your healthy. Learning proper nutrition, staying away from fad diets and diet pills, as well as using your brain and LEARNING how different types of food affect your body, and exerciseing can make you healthier individual .

Book Review: I like the idea behind it but....yikes....
Summary: 2 Stars

Okay, I guess I should start off by saying that I am a proud vegan. I love my diet for its health and environmental benefits and would recommend it to anyone.

That said, I kind of shudder to think that someone with no prior exposure to a vegan lifestyle is getting their introduction through this book. Yeah, I can handle the bad language, but they are so abusive to the reader. A few reviewers talk about the "girlfriend" tone. If any of my girlfriends talked like that to me, I'd be really upset!!

Yes, veganism is a way of losing weight - but it is not the only way of losing weight. I was a healthy weight as a carnivore, as a lacto-ovo vegetarian, and as a vegan. Going vegan has not caused me to lose a single pound. Portion control is almost the most important factor, and the menus near the end of the book don't include portions at all. They do include lists of suggested natural food products, including many prepared foods, like TV dinners. While I love some of the products listed, is over-reliance on these kinds of foods something that the authors want to encourage? Not all of them are really all that healthy. Vegan junk food is still junk food.

There is other factual information that just seems...wrong. The authors suggest donating blood as a way of helping others and losing weight. Losing weight? Excuse me? I call bull, just for the simple reason if that were true, I would have heard about it already and the American Blood Association would be using it as a way to get people to donate.

Also, the authors seem to endorse the philosophy that everything that ails you can be traced to diet. You shouldn't take aspirin for menstrual cramps because your cramps are just the result of your crappy diet. And they are also Nature's way of preparing you for the pain of childbirth. First, which one is it? (Result of crappy diet or natural process?) Second, this sounds dubious at best - ask any woman who's given birth if they thought it was easy because they had good "practice" from having had menstrual cramps. Third, some people have jobs, unlike the authors of this book, and actually need to be functional during their periods, instead of being in so much pain they can't even work. Not everyone who takes pain relievers is a "pill popper". Not everything natural is good for you. Not all your health problems are because of diet. Sometimes you really do need to see a doctor and take medicine.

I feel bad for really not liking this book, because it is getting a lot of attention, including from non-vegans. I just wish the authors of this book did a little more research and were a little less confrontational.

Book Review: Agree with some of the information but certainly not all
Summary: 3 Stars

When I bought this book, I had no idea the authors were going to pound me on the head with a vegan agenda.

While I agree that refined sugar is the devil and that buying organic is best for everyone, I do not agree with a vegan diet being right for everyone. The fact is that humans evovled incisors for a reason, ladies and gentlemen: to eat meat. One simply doesn't need eyeteeth to tear into spinach, unless there was some ancient mutant form of spinach that resembled meat that I don't know about - I'll admit I don't know EVERYTHING. Anywho, some of us have gastrointestinal issues that force us to eat meat.

Not so very long ago, I was a staunch ovo-lacto-vegetarian (i.e, I ate dairy and eggs - my thing was eat nothing with a cute face); then Ulcerative Colitis hit me hard! Meat substitutes, which are full of fillers such as agar-agar and xanthan gum, killed my colon as did pretty much everything except broth for quite a while. Anything with major carbs (rice, bread, pasta) was out, and beans, a former staple in my diet, were WAY out because of the roughage and the gas. OUCH! The only way to ingest protein, which my body needed to do repairs, was to eat chicken broth. Then I progressed to eating meat again. Of course, I bought free-range organic meats; not only are they better for you but they simply taste better, people! Then slowly I was able to add vegetables in, once my symptoms died down, one at a time. I can now eat navy beans if they are soaked 24 hours (and the soaking water is changed twice) and then cooked all day, but that is the only bean I can eat presently without feeling like my abdomen will explode. I can actually eat salad again - hallelujah! But Boca burgers are still out. They hurt my tummy.

Anyways... So thanks to prednisone, I began to put back on just a little too much weight, and I bought this book in the hopes of keeping it off. I was disappointed with the preachy, holier-than-thou attitude when it came to meat. I won't apologize for having to eat meat; if it's my health and my sanity or the chicken, well that damn chicken is going down! And homemade yogurt, made with organic milk, saved my life while I was really sick, and it keeps me from getting sick again (read Breaking the Vicious Cycle by Elaine Gottschall for more info if you have UC or Crohn's).

I recommend this book if you think you can take up the vegan lifestyle. However, if you have any gastrointestinal issues or if you just love to eat meat, I say ditch this book and eat small quantities of free-range, organic meat. And don't feel badly about it. Sigh, black beans how I miss thee!

Book Review: After reading the book use COMMON SENSE people!
Summary: 4 Stars

Stop with all the ignorant reviews and hate. This book IS NOT a diet book. Nor is it a FAD. It's about awareness and healthy choices, a lifestyle change, to get you motivated to permanently loose the FAT off your lazy behind. On a softer note, it is a book filled with information to help you choose to become a more healthy person and use better choices in what you use for food. I gave it four stars for the fact that they are pro-vegan, and I do like organic meat and diary products. But they are right about the effects of eating chemical and processed foods. I suggest to anyone that they read the book and use common sense for their personal choice about becoming vegan, vegetarian, or a healthy meat and dairy choice eater.

What all people should get out of this book is about the horrible food industries America has and the brainwashing we have become addicted to by the USDA and FDA. With the USDA and the FDA it's all about money people, not your health. Plus it's a fact that you need to eat more fruits and vegetables, cut out the chemical, quit looking for a quick fix in fast foods, and make healthier food choices to prevent most diseases and obesity that have both become so common in this country.

Americans eat junk and trash food, and have the nerve to defend the habit as if people who eat, or suggest to eat healthy are lunatics. Wake up people. Look around you. Look at yourselves. Guts are hanging everywhere. People are beginning to resemble the folks in the Disney cartoon movie WALL-E. People in this country are on too much medication related to lazy, unhealthy eating habits and lifestyles that have turned into the norm. Fad diets don't work. Garbage processed food eating diets like in the commercials on TV don't work over the long haul either. The ONLY thing that works is eating HEALTHY and doing healthy exercise (not being a gym rat)

If you don't want to become vegan or vegetarian just take into consideration the bad practices of commercial meat and dairy industry and go ORGANIC and lean with your meat and dairy choices. Cut out the fast food and all the processed sugar, salt, white flour crap, corn-filler made crap, preservatives, and chemicals. Drink more water and leave the soda's, energy drinks, fake juices, and being over caffeinated alone.

Learn something about the real food industry and buy things after reading and understanding the labels. Use your head for something other than and obstacle to good health.

This book is a great choice for becoming aware of what you put in your stomach and call healthy!
