Book Reviews of Slash

Book Review: Good Bad and Ugly
Summary: 3 Stars

As a hardcore GNR fan, I was really excited to read this book. Definitely good and bad here. I think it's important to review the story told as well as the actual quality of writing.

The Good: I loved hearing how GNR wrote music. This process is probably the most interesting part of the book, how each band member was responsible for his own parts, how the Axl separated himself from the rest of the band most of the time, and how each of them could meet in any combination (2 of them, 4 of them, etc.) and there would be major progress. Many of the songs were written within a matter of hours if not days. The inside scoop here was fascinating.

The Bad: There were parts of the book that go on and on in excrutiating detail and parts that he skips over. I'm not sure if this is because all the years of drug use really skewed his sense of time, but it makes the entire book hard to follow. For example, nearing the end he discusses his encounters with his now-wife Perla. He describes how he saw her around the clubs, how he messed around with her, how she rented his house for a year, and how he thought she was too young "at 17" to get involved with - so this is when he marries his first wife Renee. I read this several times and it reads that Perla was a club hopping, house renting adult, all before 17 years old. Based on other timeframes, this doesn't make sense and it's just confusing. As others pointed out, the "we'll get to that in a bit" line is tired and overused in the book. I get that it may not be a story that can be told chronologically, but that whole method of writing could have been handled differently.

The Ugly: The drug use is just astonishing. They got knocked down a bunch of pegs in my eyes. I spent my entire teen years idolizing these guys, and they were barely coherent enough to function - and yet - managed to make a majorly successful few albums in spite of their behavior. I used to think Axl, despite my longstanding girlhood crush, was a tantrum-throwing brat. But after reading all this, I think Axl was sick of the drugs and the crap. He had a short fuse for it, and as time wore on he tried to diversify the band a little (adding Dizzy) to maybe soften the blow of things falling apart but ended up going off in another direction entirely. The part that doesn't make sense is the story we all know - he became known for not going on stage on time, and this is what caused GNR to fall apart.

It's a good story, but every single page detailing heroin use just got old old old. About 100 pages could have been cut out of this to make it more readable.

Summary of Slash

From one of the greatest rock guitarists of our era comes a memoir that redefines sex, drugs, and rock 'n' roll.

For the first time ever, Slash tells the tale that has yet to be told from the inside: how the legendary band Guns N' Roses came together, how they wrote the music that defined an era, how they survived insane, never-ending tours, how they survived themselves, and, ultimately, how it all fell apart. Slash is a window into the world of the notoriously private guitarist and a front seat on the roller-coaster ride that was one of history's greatest rock 'n' roll machines, always on the edge of self-destruction, even at the pinnacle of its success. Slash is everything Slash is: funny, honest, ingenious, inspiring, jaw-dropping . . . and, in a word, excessive.
