Book Reviews of SlashBook Review: I couldn't put the book down. I took time off from work to keep reading it. It's that f'ing good. Slash is a standup dude. Summary: 5 Stars
I just got done reading this book: 11/28/09. I'm not lying when I say I skipped Thanksgiving dinner two days ago because I honestly could not put this book down. It is that good. Trust me.
I was growing up and going through High School in Jersey when GNR exploded on the scene. Slash doesn't really hold anything back in his book. The guy seems to be that dude we all knew at one point or another in our lives; troubled, confused yet driven but nonetheless honest to a tee with nothing to hide. That is what you come away with from this book - Slash's honest perspective from his childhood days of shoplifting to his countless days of never having a place to live and crashing wherever to massive drug & alcohol abuse and finally surviving (thank God) it all to where he is today. He doesn't seem to hold anything back (maybe some personal details which is OK since he is human) and he spills his guts without regret. I admire that.
I recommend this book. You will have a tough time putting it down -- at least I did & I'm quite sure I lost pay from my job in doing so....but it was worth it! LOL! I learned a lot about a band (actually several bands) that I had always wanted to know & I also eneded up learning something about myself in the end. You WON'T regret buying this book!
Slash is truly a stand-up guy. Hands-down.
"--Thanks to Slash for his unwielding humility & honest writing--" Keep playing man!

Book Review: Someone needs to hire a proof reader. Summary: 3 Stars
I was excite to read this book if only to get the inside story of the MELTDAOWN of one of the best Rock 'N Roll bands. They should have hired someone to proofread this book. Double words where there shouldn't be, wrong words, for example, when he talks about watching kids stand in line to buy the Use Your Illusion records, the sentence in the book reads "Watching the kids stand "on" line to get the new album". There are words in places they just shouldn't be. I'm no English major but come on; this is supposed to be a professional job.
The book does give you an interesting look at the build up to GNR. Showing how so many of the Rock 'N Roll people and bands of that era intermingled. You'll find things out about people you would have never guessed. It's a good inside look at the all of the band members as well.
As far as Slash himself goes, Which I have to say, I did pay to see him on Valentines Day touring along with Ozzy, Before I bought the book, it simply showed me that he his your average, everyday drug addict who simply got lucky. You'll also find that he feel that he is the only person in the world who can dislike Axl Rose because he knows him and anyone who does not know Axl personally can't dislike him. Well I Dislike Axle Rose......, He was a big part of bring that band down, also in the book, I don't care how Slash feel about that.
All in all. I guess it's not a bad book if you're into that kind of thing.
Book Review: Rise of a great musician, fall of a great band Summary: 4 Stars
Slash tells you the story of his life.
From his anticts as a teen in middle school and high school - the failed formations of several bands until he was brought into a dysfunctional band that was pieced together from two other bands- L.A. Guns and Hollywood Rose- to form what would be one of the greatest bands to out of Los Angeles: Guns N' Roses.
The tales don't always seem to be in sequence, but do follow at least some timeline based mostly (I'm sure) out of his own recolection.
The demise of the GnR is also discussed by Slash, as he saw it. And he makes no apologies for it. A blunt story about his life- take or leave it. From sex, drugs, death, his own near-death experience, to the rise and fall of GnR, and the formation of Velvet Revolver (in the last couple of chapters), and his own ventures apart from GnR such as Slash's Snakepit, and projects with the likes of Michael Jackson, Lenny Kravitz, and Ray Charles.
Great read, a few hiccups where the stories suddenly shift, but nothing that can't be overlooked.
Great for GnR fans.
Book Review: WTF SLash Summary: 3 Stars
I have been a GNR fan for about 19 years. I was super excited to find out someone from the greatest band was going to tell what really happen. I was largely disappointed; I never chose sides up until I read this book. I knew that the book was to be mainly about Slash, but considering that GNR was a large part of his life I thought there would be much more in depth stories. Slash is high out of his mind for almost his whole career with GNR. When his goes "in depth" about conflicts or stories involving Axl, they aren't fully explained. An average or above intelligent person would gauge no negativity or malice on Axl part just a drug addict misunderstanding. His reason for the demise of GnR is that Axl never came on time(if you don't correct a "problem" from the beginning the person sees this as okay), That Axl treated them like hired help(he spent so much time either high or looking for a lead singer this is proven), and when he kicked out non-working drug addict Steven Adler the band fell apart. So what I got from this "memoir" was that a druggie knows what it takes to make a band.
Book Review: The problems with this book. Summary: 5 Stars
The problems I had with this book. I have just finished reading it tonight. The first problem was it took up a lot of my time without me realising it. I could not put this book down. This book literally is the second book I have read from start to finish and I was absolutely mesmerised by it. If you like Slash, GNR and the rest of the guys then this is the book for you. I would say it gives you a good insight about the band and Slash's life. The second problem I have now is I don't think the rest of the guys have done the same and it is such a shame that they haven't because the world from their mouth would complement this book so well. The thing that interested me the most when reading the book is that Slash talks about a documentary they were working on during the Use Your Illusion tours. Because of the demise of the band all the film reels have been locked away never to see the light of day. This is a Guns N Roses Film that needs to be completed for all the fans. I will give this book 20 out of 10 and advise all hardcore GNR fans to buy this.
