Book Reviews of Slash

Book Review: Is that it?!
Summary: 2 Stars

Disappointing and monotonous... this book could have done with a rigorous edit. At the very least it needs to be much more concise--there just isnt enough going on here to warrant such an opus. I kept waiting for it to deliver and it never really got there. I didn't quite believe his voice (which is THE deathblow for autobiographys as far as I'm concerned)--and there were two major issues for me in this regard: 1. He comes off as something of an apologist for Axl. I have no idea whether this is due to legal constraints--but I feel there is more going on here than is said, and 2. He has a tendency to not own his decisions. One gets the sense that life just happened to Slash. Like he bumbled from one situation to another and it was all very easy going and unintentional. For me, there was something deeply inauthentic about that. There ought to be much more substance to both the book and the man.

Book Review: I do not want it to end!!
Summary: 5 Stars

I love this book...it is real and it is well written...hats off to you Slash and Anthony Bozza...one of my favorite books of all time. I was really intrigued by all the stuff I never knew....all I have to say is WOW. Slash and Anthony's style of writing is informnative, creative, and well organized..although I'm sure in Slash's frame of mind he could not remember all the details..but he sure did explain what he did rememebr very well.

It also goes into how he felt, and you feel what he feels...such as Axl's lateness and excessive spending...and just the flow of the words keeps you reading and it's way hard to put it down. I don't want it to end, though! They truley are one of the BEST R&R bands of all time...becasue even when things were not going smoothly and the "vibe" was bad...tehy still managed to make some of the best music EVER.

Book Review: surprisingly good read
Summary: 4 Stars

the book is surprisingly well-written and gives insight into how the band was formed, how they achieved tremendous success and how it all broke down with startling clarity. the best things that i found about the book was the way slash described how guns n roses came together as highly creative musicians and created music as well as how much thought and effort is put into organising each musician's part into a composed song. it is incredibly revealing in terms of the music business in those days and what it takes to become the best of the best in the field of music. slash doesn't speak negatively about his other bandmates, instead, he looks back with calmness and resignation that time provided. the book is one about excess, success, failure and is a really compelling read.

Book Review: Candid version of how he saw things go down
Summary: 5 Stars

I was surprised to see that Slash had written a book given a huge part of his mistique was how reserved he was. He said everything he wanted to through his music, so alot was left to speculations and the opinions of other people. I found myself unable to put it down and would get upset whenever my subway stop was approaching because that meant i would have to pick it back up at the end of the day (and trust me, most New Yorkers want to get out of the subway as soon as they possibly can). It was a moving, exciting and most of all an enlightening book to read. My life style is the complete opposite of Slash's but somehow i found i could relate to him. Its not a book for the judgemental kind. It's his version of how things happened and should be respected as such.

Book Review: Slash
Summary: 4 Stars

This is a great book that shows the phrase 'sex, drugs and rock n roll' to perfect effect. This book is littered with stories of drug taking excess, exploits from on tour and some degree of insight into the workings of Guns n Roses. Slash writes very candidly about a variety of events in his life and I felt you really got a feeling for who he is and what motivates him. The book has excellent photography throughout, as well as a middle colour section. The book finishes right up to date with Velvet Revolver and how they formed and write together. Overall a good rock autobiography and well worth a read if you're a fan of Slash or any of his various bands.
