Book Reviews of Slow Cooker Ready & Waiting: 160 Sumptuous Meals That Cook Themselves

Book Review: Absolutely DIVINE
Summary: 5 Stars

I was definitely skeptical when purchasing this book, as I've had and read many BAD slow-cooker books with mostly pre-made ingredients. I like to use fresh ingredients in ALL my cooking. For taste and health! Well, I read all the reviews and figured this was worth a shot.

All of you are RIGHT!! These recipes are simply amazing. They are Delish! I cannot wait to try another out of this book. I'm a newlywed and my husband has been floored by what has been coming out of the 'ol crock pot. I highly recommend the Beef Stroganoff and the Very nice red beans and rice. Which I'm having for lunch today. Yummy.

All I can say is- Don't second guess the recipe. Rick Rodgers is right- he has all the ingredients perfected. I've often thought, hmm I really should add more of this instead of water (won't it lose flavor?), or that really will need more salt. This will need more spices. But in the end, it comes out BEAUTIFULLY. You just need to trust the expert and follow the instructions. Slow cooking is very different than that of in a pot on the stove. Trust me, learn from my mistake, if it says to cut the meat into 2-inch chunks, even though you think that is too large, DO IT. After 8 hours of cooking they will be the perfect size and the meat would end up tough if you had cut it smaller. And yes, on the second or third day it even tastes better (if that is possible). His directions are very straightforward and clear.

I don't think that any of the ingredients are hard to find and many of the spices and things I keep on hand. But this book uses all fresh ingredients so you will need to plan and shop for it. And Yes, it isn't one where you just drop in the stuff and leave- it takes time. But the results are more than worth it. Just plan out about 30-40mins. to prepare and you will be fine. Anything that takes time is worthwhile. I plan on chopping up the ingredients the night before, leaving them in the fridge, and then sticking them all in the pot in the morning before work. Just plan your time!

Oh yea! Most of the recipes are planned for a 3 1/2 qt. Crock Pot. Mine is a 6 qt and they are coming out fine without any additions. But with a 6 qt. you have the ability to double the recipe as well!!

I bought a new copy for like 41cents under the used section- try this! You won't be disappointed. I'm going to buy it as gifts for my friends.

Summary of Slow Cooker Ready & Waiting: 160 Sumptuous Meals That Cook Themselves

Hearty stews. Rib-sticking chilis. Tender pot roasts. The real secret is a long, slow simmer at a constant temperature, and no appliance does this better than the slow cooker. If your old slow cooker recipes disappointed you, throw them away! The Slow Cooker Ready and Waiting Cookbook is for people who love good food!

Rick Rodgers has adapted an eclectic array of American and ethnic dishes for the slow cooker. They're all here: fancy fare (Farmer's Market Lobster and Corn Chowder, Sweet and Sour Brisket, Erna's Sauerbraten), everyday favorites (Ground Beef Chili with Cornmeal Dumplings and Herbed Tomato Sauce with Parmesan Meatballs), side dishes (Potatoes Euphoria, Smothered Green Beans, Sugarbush Beans) -- even desserts (Strawberry-Strawberry Cheesecake, Bourbon Bread Pudding, and Lemon-Raspberry Pudding Cake). Ideal for entertaining, the slow cooker keeps crowd-pleasing dips and holiday punches warm from the beginning of the party to when the last guest leaves.

A special section explains how to choose the right-size slow cooker for your needs, how to adapt a favorite recipe, and what can (and can't) be prepared in a slow cooker.
