Book Reviews of Small Favor (The Dresden Files, Book 10)Book Review: Things are just starting to pick up. Summary: 5 Stars
Another great addition to the Dresden Files. As Jim Butcher really starts digging into his characters he is able to intertwine the relationships so the stories don't seem like "oh, today's guest star is [blank]". Jim Butcher also is letting each character grow with the novels and not remain a static 2-D person to play the foil-du-jour to Harry Dresden. In Small Favor, many past characters and story lines build up more steam as Dresden has what might be called a "crapstorm" dumped on him. For those of you familiar he has to deal with the Denarians, Winter (Mab), Summer (Titania), the Archive and Kincaid, no support from the C.P.D., Gentleman Johnny Marcone, and what turns to be a little more insight into the Black Council. You can almost feel Jim Butcher using 'Small Favor' to take mythos of Harry Dresden and crank things up a notch and given what has been said and done, the future is "gonna get really good!"
Book Review: excellent book in an excellent series Summary: 5 Stars
The Winter Queen Mab wants Harry to rescue Gentleman Johnny Marcone (gangster) from kidnapers who are very very powerful magically. As Harry still has to repay 2 of 3 favors owed he is stuck. The Queen of Summer opposes him just to make things interesting.
Usual excellent characters as well as good humor (the eldest and most powerful Gruf). Nicely done plot with good twists and over all excellent. A few minor bobbles mostly being unsure of whether or not its Summer or Winter.
One unresolved item, why is the Queen of Summer in opposition?
With considerable patience and thought this can be read standalone but I strongly recommend the series at least from Summer Knight (The Dresden Files, Book 4) if not the start.
Book Review: Great Read, but still disappointing Summary: 3 Stars
(SPOILER ALERT)
The one thing that bothered me most about this novel, was where's the magic? The one thing that always impressed me about the Dresden series was the treatment of magic. Other than a boost by an archangel (huh?!?!?), Harry uses firearms more than magic.
It was a good book and I couldn't put it down, but everything after the first third of it left me in a kind of haze. Other than non-stop action, there really wasn't all that much there.
Where's the black council? Why isn't harry tracking them down? Say again why Murphy refused the sword? huh? Wait, Harry has TWO swords now? Wait, the only Knight left is an agnostic? huh?
The book, just really confused me and left me wanting... the real Dresden. It's almost like this was from the ridiculous TV series (why, Jim, why?).
Book Review: A great addition to one of my favorite series. Summary: 5 Stars
This book delivers tons of action, a huge cast, and a plot that seems to be a harbinger of the future. All considered, an amazing and worthwhile addition to the series as a whole.
I can understand the complaints some people have about this as compaired with the other books. That being said, a long-term interconnected series requires entries that hit different notes. No one ever made a symphony with just one note repeated over and over.
Churchy? Is that a criticism. I think that considering the abundance, maybe overabundance, of bad guys throughout the series it's fair to have some of the 'good' guys poke their head in and say hello. 'sides, Harry might ally himself with the angels, but he's never gonna be a choir boy.
In the end, totally worth reading. Keep 'em coming, Jim!
Book Review: A pleasant return, but... Summary: 4 Stars
An enjoyable return to the world of Harry Dresden that unfortunately seemed somewhat lighter on episodic plot content than most of the rest of the series.
It does deliver an engaging story full of many long awaited answers, without completely ruining future visits to those plot-related questions, and does a fine job of continuing to evolve & mature Harry in a satisfying fashion.
My only real gripe is the minor cliffhanger, or lack of satisfying closure, surrounding Michael. It appears obvious enough how this will or can play out, but due to the typical 1-3 years that passes within the books (and per writing), I would rather have had Michael & Harry speak now than later.
"Well now you can go build houses like you always wanted to do", Harry suggests to Michael.
