Book Review: Great method. Poor content.

The method is great. Listening, then speaking, but for someone like myself with absolutely no French (ie a beginner)the content was inappropriate. I am planning a trip to France later this year. I still don't know any basic vocabulary, how to introduce myself. How to ask for directions, the bank, everyday stuff like that.
On a positive note, I thought , hey, this is what I need for Spanish. I did very well in high school Spanish but have never been comfortable trying to speak. This method actually gets you speaking right away. So with a solid vocabulary in Spanish and a knowledge of grammer, I expect Smart Spanish to get me speaking.

If you want to be fluent in French one day, you must practice with these cds regularly, but for once you'll have fun doing it!!! I struggled with other methods, but this one has a different approach as it is like that by which kids learn. It introduces the patterns of the spoken language, not just grammar and vocabulary, so it's possible, in short order, to begin constructing sentences that sound French. It's a real confidence-builder. And it's so much fun. The speakers have engaging personalities that kept me interested. Buy this in a combination with a more basic course, but make sure you start with this one. You will get a lot from these cds.Book Review: Different approach.

Finally something that is different. Very refreshing. Smart French allows you to be creative in your practice. Do like me, repeat half of a dialog and go to the next step. You won't have time to get bored. This course is not basic or advance, it is different. Smart French has found a way to tutor you in what is generally overlooked, the real way to speak and to understand. I have listened to the first couple of lessons several times and I have made a lot of progress already. I also work with the Smart French Introduction CDs for the basics and Rick Steves' Phrase Book for travel sentences. But this French course made a huge difference.Book Review: Pronunciation only

This product is not bad if all you want to do is learn how to pronounce French more like the French people do. But if you're expecting to actually learn any of the language beyond its conversational pronunciation, you would be much better off buying a different product.
The whole package consists of 3 CD's -- a total of seven 1-minute long conversations that are repeated multiple times. You are expected to pick up pronunciation from listening and repeating after you hear each phrase. [...]If you already know French pretty well and just want to learn how to listen/speak more authentically, this would be okay for you.

I believe this item is ok if you already know good French reasonably well, especially the accent. I believe that anyone studying any language should first learn quality language before learning street language. For example, if one is from China, it is best to study good English first, such as is spoken by the educated class, such as people at ivy leage schools, before learning English as spoken by common people is southern GA or TX. This French course is for people who already know French as spoken by cultured or educated people, and want to better understand French as spoken on the street in fast conversation.
