Book Reviews of So That's What They're For!: The Definitive Breastfeeding Guide 3rd edition

Book Review: Disgusted
Summary: 1 Stars

This book was not helpful in helping me with breatfeeding. Like many other reveiewers, I think it was light on facts and concrete information. My main issue with the book though, is that the author was very judgemental. She was extremely biased towards blaming a mother for not being able to successfuly breastfeed. In fact, she devoted a whole chapter to this listing the reasons as 'excuses'.

The fact is that there are biological reasons why a woman would not succeed at breastfeeding. However, the author almost never touches on these and doesn't offer any help in dectecting these problems or rectifying them. In my case, I had to supplement my daughter with formula soon after giving birth. I also continued to breastfeed. I stopped breastfeeding at 3 months at that point I was bone tired, my hair had started falling out and I was still not producing enough milk. Four months after her birth I was identified as being hypothyroid. The hypothyroidism was very servere and it took 5 months to get me within normal thyroid range and to stay there. This is now a life time condition for me.

There are plenty of issues such as hypothroidism that will stop a woman from producing enough milk for her baby. It is not standard to test for hormonal conditions after birth, so these may be unidentified. Some may be transitory or permanent. Either way they can inhibit a woman's milk production.

In addition to being hypothyroid, I was identified 5 months fter giving birth as being B12 deficient due to malabsorbtion issues. Even if I had being able to produce enough milk, my daughter would have not have received enough of this vitamin and would almost certainly have ended up with neurological damage as a result.

I credit formula as being a lifesaver for her. She is now a healthy 18 month old and doing well. My belief is that due to insurance and the way some people think, there is often a bias towards blaming a woman for failure to breast feed. I think this means medical problems for this are often the last thing to be looked into. This book really re-inforces a blame the mother approach. How many mothers and their babies have suffered because of this attitude? If this author had a more helpful attitude, I may have identified my problems earlier and had more success. In fact, I would have asked for thyroid testing during pregnancy as the coniditon can damage a fetus.

A final point is that I also saw the author as being very hypocritical. I remember at one point the author mentioned that she went back to work while her child was very young. However, she had a "good reason" for this while a woman who didn't breast feed according to her was just making excuses. Apparently the author's husband had taken a substantial pay cut, so she had to go back to work. I really wonder if they tried down sizing their lifestyle, getting rid of the internet, t.v reducing other expenses and so forth. A lot a families make ends meet on very little. I am not against mothers working outside the home or fathers. However, I do wonder if the author is applying the same kind of scrutiny to herself about work outside the home as she does a non breastfeeding mother.

Overal I was quite digusted with the author's attitude and very disappointed in the content of this book. There are other breastfeeding books out there far better than this one. I wish I had read them instead of this. Seek help and advice elsewhere! If breasfeeding is not working for you get medical tesing done so you can rule out physical reasons for your problems. Experimenting with different techniques will always fail and is fultile unless you are actually healthy enough to breastfeed.

Summary of So That's What They're For!: The Definitive Breastfeeding Guide 3rd edition
