Book Reviews of Solve Your Child's Sleep ProblemsBook Review: Works well if the baby is old enough Summary: 4 StarsI almost wrote a review several months ago when we tried this with our 4-month old. It didn't work at all and after a week of crying all night, I gave up. I tried again just last week when my son was 9 months old and it worked beautifully after only three nights. He went from waking every 2-3 hours to sleeping from anywhere from 10 to 12 hours depending on the night. I have three kids and have tried the more moderate approaches before (Pantley, Sears). The other approaches are more appealing to me as a mom, but I have to say that I don't think they're as effective. Ferber makes two points that are particularly relevant: a) habits are important. If a baby is used to being nursed to sleep, a baby will want to be nursed to sleep all the time. Imagine having your pillow taken away and you realize the issue. It would take awhile to recalibrate. b) eating during the night when the digestive system is shut down is not good for sleep. I tend to think this makes sense and saw the results when my son would wake around 2:30-3. He would then nurse every hour or two until 8 am. I think this is because he wasn't sleeping as soundly with his digestive system cranking away. All this is to say that I think Ferber is really the way to go. If you try it for 3 or 4 days and it's not working, consider the age of the child and try again when the baby is older. I can't say how grateful I am to finally have 8 hours of sleep. Wish I had tried again sooner!
