Book Review: A dark and sexy paranormal read

M'Cal is a merman whose song can bring the greatest beauty, or the greatest horror to any who hear him. He is enslaved to an evil witch who uses his powers to steal the souls of anyone she desires. His latest order is to capture the soul of a brilliantly gifted musician.

Violinist Kitala Bell has a gift, or rather a curse if you ask her. She has the ability to see people's deaths, but only the violent ones. Her latest vision for some unknown reason has her reaching out to protect the young woman named Alice who is next to die. In the process of trying to save Alice, Kit comes face to face with destiny. But what kind of destiny still remains to be seen.

M'Cal is struck by the beauty of Kit's music and soul the moment he meets her and fights with everything he has to resist the tug of his slavery to the witch. Reluctantly drawn into Kit's quest to save Alice, he discovers Kit is the one woman who can bring happiness to his miserable life... if only he can continue to fight the compulsion to steal her soul. What is it about Kit, and for that matter, Alice, that people are so desperate to destroy them?

Soul Song is a dark story, somewhat more than I was expecting it to be, but that tone is necessary to tell M'Cal and Kit's story. There are some scenes of torture described throughout the book, though never overdone, but this is crucial to make readers understand just how cruel M'Cal's master really is. Without the detail provided, we can't understand the full impact of who she is and what drives her. Most readers will not have problems with these scenes though there is the possibility some especially sensitive readers may be put off by them.

The action and suspense is very well done as we are left guessing throughout the entire novel why the witch is so desperate to destroy Kit and what exactly Alice has to do with everything. As we barrel through events unfolding along with Kit and M'Cal, many shocking secrets come to light, some of which will take readers completely by surprise. I loved the strong details given to paint a vivid picture of each and every scene. I could perfectly visualize the gruesome images Kit sees of people's deaths and locations where everything occurs.

My oh my, the passion between M'Cal and Kit! Their mutual attraction is so hot that I could feel the sparks zinging off the pages and right up through my fingertips. These are two very passionate people and that is made quite apparent every time they come together. Oftentimes, when I see two characters falling for each other so hard in the middle of a battle for their lives, I'm turned off of the story because who really is going to jump the bones of someone they're hot for when enemies are following with guns (or other more supernatural weapons) a-blazin'. Not so here though. M'Cal and Kit's relationship is very believable and occurring at a natural pace, even in the midst of all the dangers.

Though not my first book by Marjorie M Liu, Soul Song was my first read from her wildly popular Dirk & Steele series and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Fortunately for me, Kitala Bell is also new to the Dirk & Steele Agency so while she is being filled in as to who they are and what they do, so am I. I can definitely see where knowledge of past books would have helped me to understand some of the secondary characters, but for the purposes of this story, I didn't have to worry too much. Everything I needed to know was explained to me.
