Book Reviews of Spanish for DummiesBook Review: Prety good book! Summary: 4 Stars
I like this book. A lot. It's one of my favorites for learning and reviewing bite sized pieces of Spanish. I agree with the reviewer who said that it should not be used alone. Actually, what I am finding after trying to learn Spanish for business for about a year, is that there is NO single resource that can be used alone. I travel a lot on business to various Spanish speaking countries and this is the book that I take along most often. It deserves a place in your Spanish-learning library. My experience has been that to learn Spanish on your own, you need books, tapes, dictionaries, videos, Spanish TV, newspapers, PLUS you have to practice, practice, practice with native speakers. Every type of resource you can think of. If you want to learn quickly, move to a Spanish speaking country for a year and devote the year to learning Spanish. Otherwise, it will require persistence and patience.
Book Review: Not good if you want to become fluent in Spanish Summary: 3 Stars
I ordered this book from a book club and when I received it, I admit I was a little disappointed. After browsing through the book, it seems like it is geared more towards people who DO NOT want to be fluent in Spanish and basically have to learn basic phrases if they are going to travel to a Spanish-speaking country. There was a short chapter on grammar, but it did not seem very in-depth at all to me. On the plus side, there was a CD that came with it and there is a pronunciation track on it which could be very helpful (but not completely sure, I didn't actually listen to the CD). Other than that is was just how to say very basic Spanish phrases. There was also a coupon for a free Berlitz Spanish lesson (unfortunately, there isn't one close to me anyway). All in all, if you just want basics, this is for you. If you want to be fluent, skip over this one and get Madrigals Magic Key to Spanish.
Book Review: Not to be used alone Summary: 4 Stars
Im trying to learn spanish because I live in Miami and I think I'll have a better time getting a job if I can speak it. However, this book is really like a primer book for the absolute basics. personally, I dont think anything beats a computer program for pronounciation. On the computer, you can hear certian words over and over and have the program help you pronouce. But, I find the computer programs to be pretty much useless unless you already know the basics of the language, so I think this book would go perfectly with any material that teaches at a higher level. And in response to the person who gave this book one star I would say that this book is not designed to get you fluent, its for people who have no clue when it comes to the language and I think its excellent at preparing you for the real study of spanish
Book Review: Buying this book doesn't make you a dummy Summary: 4 Stars
I don't care for the series "For Dummies," but I got this one anyway...and was pleasantly surprised! As a Spanish teacher, I think this book does a pretty good job introducing the language, formatting that's pleasant to the eye, and of course, grammar explanation. If you are truly teaching yourself, this is a GREAT place to start. It's conducive to skipping around if you get too bored with a particular lesson, and you can supplement with information when you need a little more practice.
For the money, this is a great adult-centered teaching guide.
For the much younger student, it's of course, WAY too intense, and not near "fun" enough to keep interest.

Book Review: Spanish for Dummies - A good refresher for previous students Summary: 4 Stars
This is an excellent book, very user friendly. It does a good job explaining things in an easily understood manner. It is loaded with dialogs and is interesting. The written part is the best of the 5 or 6 Spanish books I have purchased. The CD, on the other hand, is a bit of a disappointment as it is only in Spanish. It doesn't help me much until I have memorized all the dialog and know what they are saying. I have a Spanish speaking girlfriend. She and I are now recording the dialogs ourselves, so I give a line in Engish, then she repeats it in Spanish. Then she and I both listen to the tapes. We both think the written dialogs from the book are excellent, but the tapes are only helpful once it has both languages.
