Book Reviews of Speak No Evil: A Novel

Book Review: action-packed police procedural romance
Summary: 5 Stars

Eighteen year old college student Angela Vance went with him because she thought he was safe but at his place he tied her to his bed, glued her mouth shut, tortured, raped and killed her. He dumped her body and when the police find her they have no evidence linking her to a killer except the man that reported her missing. Thirty-nine year old Steve Thomas who had sex with the young woman knew something was wrong when she didn't write in her online diary describing in graphic detail her sexcapade.

Steve immediately calls his brother sheriff Nick Thomas of Bozeman, Montana asking him to come to San Diego to help him. He arrives and meets with the sexy lead detective Carina Kincaid who takes an immediate liking to him. When another college teen is killed in the same manner and evidence points away from Steve, Nick volunteers his services because he has been on the receiving end of a serial killer's actions. As the two law enforcement officials work together they find themselves falling in love but their relationship has to be put on the back burner because another college student is killed and shortly thereafter a fourth girl is kidnapped. The killer is calculating and if he isn't caught many more lives will be lost.

This police procedural romance is full of action and gives the reader an interesting look at an ongoing investigation. Allison Brennan has a distinct voice that lends itself to creating characters that are dedicated people trying to do the best they can. The protagonists look at themselves as ordinary people trying to do a job but they are heroes because they risk their lives to save others. The fast paced story keeps readers immersed in the tale until the last page is turned.

Book Review: EXCITING SUSPENSE THRILLER
Summary: 5 Stars

Carina Kincaid is a police detective faced with a grissley murder. The young co-ed was found with a garbage bag over her face, a vile word scratched into her skin and she had been raped with various objects. Carina searches diligently because she fears this might be a serial rapist. The girls boy-friend is much older than her and becomes the main suspect. Steve Thomas has a brother who is a sheriff and he quickly calls Nick for help to prove he did not kill his girl friend.

Nick Thomas is recovering from an attack by a serial killer. he still suffers with painful legs and knees from the attack. His mental state is not that great either. But naturally he comes to the defense of his older brother. He and Carina hit it off and she comes to realize she probably needs his help as another body quickly turns up.

The relationship between the brothers and the developing attraction between Nick and Carina is great. The suspense is heavy, and the delusions of this murderer are just plain scary. They quickly realize Steve is not involved but the murderer is not going to stop until they stop him.

Wonderful read, kept me wondering the whole time. You have to read it if u are looking for a great suspenseful adventure.

Book Review: This one gets under your skin.
Summary: 5 Stars

Detective Carina Kincaid finds herself faced with a particularly grissly murder when she is brought to the scene to investigate Angie Vance's death. Her search immediately turns her toward Angie's ex-boyfriend, Steve Thomas, who becomes their prime suspect.

This induces Steve to call his brother, Sheriff Nick Thomas from Montana, in to help him clear his name. While Carina and Nick are delving into the online world of MyJournal pages and secrets, another girl is murdered. Followed by a third. They realize they are dealing with a serial killer, one who loves his work, and the race is on to try and find him before he kills again.

Allison Brennan writes suspense like NO one else. Her characters stay with you, even the killers since she does such an amazing job of getting into their heads. Speak No Evil is the first in a series of three. It offers the best in suspense thrillers, with just the right amount of romance to add to the story. A terrific read.

Book Review: Great characters, grim story
Summary: 3 Stars

I am always attracted to stories that have characters with whom I can sympathize. I also like thrillers. Allison Brennan's Evil series has interesting characters such as Carina Kincaid of the expansive Kincaid family. You don't have to read the books in order to enjoy them, but it helps to understand the arc of characters. The serial murders in all her books are grim, of course. The redeeming feature is the battle of wits between the depraved and the law. Personally I find the sex scenes gratuitous and distract from an otherwise challenging suspense story. On the other hand, in this particular book, Speak No Evil, the all too realistice concept of "friends with benefits", a dreadful development of the 21st century in the USA, is examined. As in this book, it leads to superficial relationships that lead to problems with friendships and lasting significant relationships. The hostage situation at the climax was all too realistic. Enjoy.

Book Review: One of the worst books I've ever read!
Summary: 1 Stars

This is the first Allison Brennan book I've tried out and it will be the last. I am a fan of almost every genre, as long as the books are well written. I have currently been reading quite a bit of suspense/thriller/mystery books and have to say that I was very disappointed. I cannot understand how on earth this author came to be so popular, since her writing is some of the worst that I've come across in a very long time. By the time I reached Chapter 5, I couldn't bring myself to read any further, because to do so was torture. I can't believe I paid for this book. The story line was obvious and the main characters were boring and did nothing to catch my interest or sympathy.

For a really good suspense/thriller, I would recommend anything by Tami Hoag and Heather Graham's "Dead Room" was pretty good, although her other books are not up to the same standard.
