Book Reviews of Sqr in PeopleSoft and Other Applications

Book Review: For SQR this is the S Q R - Supreme Quality Resource
Summary: 5 Stars

For those who do not have time to go through this review in full, one line observation on the book:

For those Pro's and 'Want-to-be Pro's in SQR - This book is the S Q R : Supreme Quality Resource.

Whenever I visited a book store, I used to wonder why there are no books at all on SQR - for a long time. In amazon.com, I found, to my immense joy, this book. I wanted to buy this - mainly owing to non availability of books on this subject. annnnd ...

it was like a person finding good drinking water in plenty while travelling in desert. it was like a treasue hunter hitting on a gold mine.

I possess and have read many books on subjects related to my profession- on JCL, on Operating Systems, on simulation, on Computer system performance and modelling and on ERP and on project management and general management.

This book covers all known aspects of SQR in a coherent, concise manner very cogently and yet in a very simple and easily understandable language construct. This very clearly reflects the depth of knowledge of the authors and the command they have on the language - English and SQR - both.

It will be worth a while - even for those planning to author technical books - to go through this book - to understand how to present the subject!!!

In a way, I curse the authors because this book is like a multi-course royal feast to a starving person - one not being able to decide what to read first. ( That is another beauty of the book - it is not a serial- one can take any topic and get to know what they want on that area of the subject)

In particular, I found chapter 18,22,23,25,12,10,11,17 to be very informative and resourceful in that order.

One thing I am not very clear is the restriction on the type of sorting techniques discussed - is it inherent to the SQR limitation or what? (which is acceptable since it is not a core programming language in that it is a reporting tool mainly)

Before concluding .. In any review, it is customary to criticize adversely . I want to follow suit. I tried a lot to find something to make noise about. I could not. But I do not want to leave it like that.

Here is one : "The print could have been bolder - reducing the strain on the eyes" !! ( I am now glad that I had atleast one thing to complain of)

Making this book available through their site is going to make life harder for those in amazon.com because I ( for that matter even other customers getting this book) will be expecting other books available in future - to be of the same top quality giving best value for money.

What I spent for buying this book - I do not consider it a cost but an investment. Ram

Summary of Sqr in PeopleSoft and Other Applications

This book starts with the basics and leads the reader through a hands-on tutorial on Structured Query Report Writer.

SQR in PeopleSoft and Other Applications fills a big gap in the enterprise computing marketplace. For starters, this book explains (beginning from near zero) how to program with Structured Query Report Writer (SQR). It discusses the peculiarities of writing SQR software to interact with PeopleSoft databases. Readers are shown how to integrate SQR programs with the Process Scheduler and how to take advantage of the PeopleSoft API. There's coverage of SQC files and the mechanics of calling SQR code from PeopleSoft online panels, plus appendices that document command-line flags and built-in functions.

The authors' approach to the topic reflects their considerable experience as SQR and PeopleSoft consultants. SQR in PeopleSoft--particularly its more advanced sections--contains lots of code that feels like it came only slightly modified from a consulting job. One particularly neat element is an SQR program that uses a flat file to provide an interface between PeopleSoft and IBM/Lotus cc:Mail. Though there's no companion CD-ROM, you can download all the code from the publisher's Web site. The code is well organized and serves as a fine base for the tutorial provided. --David Wall

Topics covered: SQR data elements fundamentals, pages, programs, and procedures; query and reporting capabilities; advanced SQR capabilities; graphics (including bar coding); Internet integration; and complex data structures.
