Book Review: Nice Picture Book

I just returned from a 5-day trip to St John.
Prior to leaving on this trip I purchased two St John Guides: St John Beach Guide by Gerald Singer and St John Feet, Fins and Four Wheel Drive by Pam Gaffin.
I bought St John Beach Guide first. The concensus of all reviews at that time was that it was a nice picture book with good information about St John. After reading the book and traveling to St John I can agree with that concensus. Still, I was a little disappointed by the quality of the book including the cover, binding and print quality. Shutterfly creates higher quality books with your own phots.
One thing I did like in the St John Beach Guide in the first half of the book was the aerial and wide shots that show several beaches in one photo and their proximity to each other. In the second half of this book ... after the part on Hawksnest and Gibney, the book quit doing this. It really helped me know which beach i was going to encounter next along Northshore Road.
My Bottom Line is that I preferred Feet, Fins and Four Wheel Drive to St John Beach Guide for quantity and quality of information. I prefer the writing style, humor and sarcasm that Ms. Gaffin uses in addition to highly detailed directions and how-to's. The St John Beach Guide does provide valuable and concise information, as well ... just not as much information and not as much "extra island flavor".
If you only want to have one book with you and still be able to get around and see every single thing there is to see on St John, the only book you really need is St John Feet, Fins and Four Wheel Drive. If you want a nice keepsake with decent info and nice photographs, then purchase both of Mr Singer's books as supplemental information. If cost is not an object, I think it would be nice to have all three of these St John Guide books.
