Book Reviews of Stalemate (Eve Duncan)

Book Review: Definitely Stale
Summary: 1 Stars

I read the first couple of pages not believing it was written by a professional writer. The beginning, which is mostly dialogue, is seriously amateur. I know thirteen year olds who can write better. Heck, I write better. Then I skipped to the end, and I noticed that someone's arms dealing didn't hurt anybody. Heavenly Zeus! How can arms dealing never hurt anybody? Guns are made to hurt people! This author needs a seriously reality check. She sounds like one of those dumb romantics that make the "bad boy" good, so the heroine can actually marry him.
I don't think I ever want to read a novel by this author. The fact that this author is a "top seller" also proves how pathetic today's readers are. After all, isn't Paris Hilton a famous celebrity?

Book Review: Loved Stalmate
Summary: 4 Stars

I'm a new reader to Iris Johansen. I actually received Stalemate from a friend for a birthday present and I loved it. She didn't realize that this book was one in a series of books but it didn't really matter. I was able to figure out what was going on from her explanations along the way. I am now going to the 1st book and starting from there. I read the book after Stalemate, Quicksand and I really liked it as well. I will agree with one of the other reviewers and say that it is a bit irritating with the use of some of the phrases she uses too frequently. But, the books are good enough that it's easy to over-look the phrases.

Book Review: Really bad
Summary: 2 Stars

This books is really bad. It is written like it was just thrown together from a list of stereotypes with a story trying to emanate from it. At one point, the Columbian anti-hero says that he only eats tortillas because it reminds him of his childhood. I'm sorry, but a simple fact checker would have noted that tortillas are from Central America and while Columbians may have a form of tortilla, Arepa, it is COMPLETELY different.

The woman character is supposed to be strong but in actuality, it only highlights her weaknesses. It was just a poor book with soap opera lines that are truly unbelievable.

Book Review: Now I know why readers dislike Eve
Summary: 2 Stars

Eve is really selfish and doesn't deserve either Joe or Jane. I'm with the other readers, Iris needs to bring Bonnie home and I have no concept why any of the men find her so attractive.

I think it would be interesting if someone was attracted to Joe and Eve spent an entire book trying to keep him from being attracted to the other woman.

It would be a nice twist if the other woman was a cop and was the one to find Bonnie and Bonnie's killer...and Bonnie's last words to Eve was..."You should have let me go Mama...now you've lost Joe, I'm sorry."

Book Review: Don't bother...
Summary: 1 Stars

In this book, Johansen takes an interesting set of characters, the outline of a plot that could work, and ends up with a very uninteresting book in which she undermines her primary characters. Her major character, Eve Duncan, makes repeated bizarre judgments which put herself and people she purports to love in extreme danger.
I join with other reviewers who suggest that: a) Joe finds someone who loves him; b) Eve enters long-term therapy; c) Johansen gives up on Eve, does better research, and tries to make her characters' motives and actions plausible.
